I shipped an expensive item ($400)through UPS, and the woman just wrote me to tell me that it had cracked in half. I've never had to file for such a large amount before, and I'm afraid they will deny the claim for any reason just because of the amount. It was wrapped with big bubble wrap and lots of newspaper. Any experiences?

i have had several claims with UPS, never a problem. granted, none of mine was that large. I always print off the auction and take that to the shipping counter as proof of value. they will have the buyer hold onto the item for a week in case they want to send someone to look at it. tell them to hold on to all packaging too.

they have always been very nice with me, making payment within 2 weeks.

for 400 dollars,UPS will send someone to your bidder's home ,look at the item and take picture before they will process the claim.
If your bidder paid you with a credit card either thru paypal or merchant account, tell her it will take awhile to get the money,so be patient and not file chargeback.

You will also need to actually file the claim. UPS changed the rules about a year ago and it is now the shippers responsibility to file the claim. Once the claim is approved, the check will also come directly to you. Then you will need to refund the amount.

The easiest way to file a claim is to do it directly from the UPS web site.
Good luck

UPS is very picky about how you pack fragile items. Did you double box it? If you didn't, you may have a probglem collecting. I quit using UPS over 4 yrs. ago because of their way of handling claims. Anything of a value of more than $50.00, I double box, & never have a problem with FedEx Ground.

Sanmar...I agree. I've only had a couple of claims with FedEx Ground, but they were totally painless. I've handled cargo l&d claims all mi life and I have to admit, these people are great. As everyone else will advise, tell the recipient to keep the item and all the packing material until an inspection or unless instructed otherwise by the carrier.
