My TOS says that newbies with less than 10 feedback have to pay with PP. So a (sounds like a) teenager wins the auction and has 0 fb. She writes this AM and says that she will be sending a money order in a few days.
Last time I explained the system to a newbie I got reamed so don't want to do that again. I am thinking I will accept the money order but charge her an extra handing fee. It seems that if she wants to change the terms then I change the amount due.
Whatcha think? And how much? It was an $8.00 item. Thanks, Louise

I'd accept the money order and not charge her any more.

I would accept the money order if it was me.
Your probably lucky to get paid the way eBay is going and all the non pay bidders. I can see you not wanting to take personal checks but I would accept that money order.

hi Herbs:
first, i dont mean to 'question you' when i ask the questions...
..did the bidder really say "sending a money order in a few days?"
..this is another "newbie" view of our business you think?

What does "a few days" really mean? Is that the end of this week or sometime next month?? I would write & explain that payment is due within X number of days, not at the whim of the buyer. I really don't think you can force anyone to pay by PayPal & be a successful seller. I don't accept personal checks, not because of bad checks, but I don;t want stuff sitting aroun for 2 to 3 weeks. I state in my TOS that I will ship within 24 hrs of receipt of payment.

Yes and Yes. "Hi! Thank you for the email this is my first ebay purchase so I'm gla it seems to be going smoothly. I chose to do money order becaus I don't have Pay Pal and I will be sending you the money within the next few days."
And who is going to educate them? And do they even care? Just a reflection into our society today. JMHO
I like the previous 2 replys, because it put it back on me as a seller. Do I want to be the educator or do I want to go to the bank.
I did write back to tell her that I will accept the money order but I am bending my rules for her and to please know the next seller might not be so accomadating.

My point of view - if you decide to charge me extra because I have simply not bought enough things yet you can bet that I will never purchase from you again and if I decide to pay I would absolutely leave you a neg for additional unspecified charges.
Be glad the person is paying you and move on.

I totally agree. We do accept money orders & cashiers checks (no personal or busineess checks) but say in our TOS - PayPal for newbies with less than 10 fb. I don't want to wait around forever holding back an item, waiting for a mo that is not going to arrive.
We too ship right away, but do not have it in our listing just in case something delays us by a day. A lot of our feedbacks mention fast shipping. Usually if we have $$ by noon it will go the same day.
I'm anxious to see how this goes. One $8.00 item is not going to change my life.
Thanks for all the input. Louise

Loouise - the thing you have tp remember is that most newbies do not have PayPal yet and with the confirmation process it can take longer for them to get their account set up and a payment sent than it will take to get the money order depending on where they are.

A newbie with zero FB would most likely not be signed up for PayPal & more often not even know what it is.
I would accept the MO & certainly not add charges. Since it's her first eBay experience, make it a nice one so she will come back.

Fenix and Jane have a good point, Louise. You know, you might be missing out on sales because of your TOS. JMHO

"did write back to tell her that I will accept the money order but I am bending my rules for her and to please know the next seller might not be so accomadating."

"Whatcha think? And how much? It was an $8.00 item."
again, you answered your own question. as for how much, well in my HO, zero.

Let's all play alienate the newbie! After all TOS is more important than money in hand. These jerks better learn how to dance or they can't buy from ME!

personally, i would rather a newbie do a money order than Paypal. they can't do a chargeback on a money order can they? i would specify a postal money order though. you won't have any problems cashing it then.

Take the money order
Believe me I have waited weeks from old-timers with hundreds of feedbacks
Sometimes they are just as bad.
Ebay already has a bad reputation for dishonest sellers and scam artists. We all had a zero feedback rating at one time..

Good grief, I'd take the money order and run. Why would it matter if you have an item in your inventory for another few days? I hate PayPal fees on low-end items and beg my buyers NOT to use it but to send a check or m.o. instead. I don't even hold checks--and haven't had one bounce in 5 years--yet.

I cannot understand why such an idea would even cross your mind.
I did write back to tell her that I will accept the money order but I am bending my rules for her and to please know the next seller might not be so accomadating
I doubt this very much.
First you want to fine her & then act like your doing her a favor.
Seems all the buyer wanted to do was pay the best way she could for an auction.
Not a very nice welcome to eBay.
