Considering selling an armoire that we are no longer using online and was wondering if anyone had good experiences shipping furniture across country.
I cannot deliver and I'd hate to have some stranger come to the house.

Build a shipping crate for it. Get paper furniture pads from a local mover. Wrap it up and put it in the crate. Weigh it and get the dimensions of the crate. Call a few common carriers such as FedEx Freight, ABF, etc and get rates to a city 1500 miles away. It will give you an idea of their rate structure and a feeling of which company you wish to deal with. Then list it and have the bidders email you for a rate quote to their location. You can respond after you get a quote from the carrier you choose to deal with. Once you get comfortable with the service you get from a certain carrier, don't be afraid to start listing the bigger and heavier items that most sellers are afraid to handle. If you have access to items that can be listed in the business and industrial category, you can make some big money as the thought of shipping scares many sellers away from these items.

I don't know about anyone else, but on items like these I'd prefer putting an ad in my local paper or insist on local pickup only. Is there a storage facility near you that you could temporarily rent? We have some cheap ones around here. That way if someone wanted to see it or buy it, they could pick it up there. It might be cheaper than trying to find someplace that will package the thing for you. Just a thought.
I'm a wreck when I mail something out that's glass, I couldn't imagine mailing an item as large as an armoire.

WE consult a local auctioneer who we know, he ships and crates all the time, he swears he makes good money at it and does.He ships from the midwest to the east coast all the time.
In your area ask some of the local people, also check with some local manufactures and they can tell you who ships, packs and crates. They may do it all the time have the materials and be glad for the work.Plus they have the relationships with the trucking lines and can tell you what works best.

I recently sold some heavy guitar amplifiers, had to crate them up and went to a local freight outlet who told me to check with:
www.freightquote.com
He says 'freightquote' usually sends him the business, but he said I might get a better deal. Sort of like PriceLine, but for shipping your stuff out.
You need to know approximate dimensions and weight for starters. You create your own bill of lading online, but you want to make sure you get the weight right as you can get a hefty surcharge if you guess low.
