6.00 plus bucks for plastic can food covers??
This gets me pizzed. I can hardly get 6-7 bucks for a nice piece of bone china and they got bids for 6.00 on this?! I am starting to feel the goofyer and cheaper the stuff, the better the selling!

They definitely want plastic lids more than I do! No way would I pay that. I just use ziplocs. Cheap & Efficient!

twisted cat heh? LOL!
I just threw away a can cover the other day and I was amazed last time I went to Wally World to find one how much they cost and how few there were! I bought "one size fits all" and I have to tell you, they DON'T fit dog food cans! I can only imagine what they do fit. Most of them were for cat food cans I guess. I beat - I hammered - and I said to H*LL with it and threw it in the garbage can and resorted to a piece of tin foil.
You might try Dollar Tree or your nearest supermarket. Failing that, stick the can in a sandwich baggie and fold over the top.
I used to have a chihuahua who was VERY fussy about what he would and wouldn't eat. He was forced by the rules of the game to eat Mighty Dog when the people dinner menu wasn't doglet-appropriate.
I discovered he *preferred* his food at room temp so I'd let it warm up for a while before I served His Royal Majesty. I'd leave the food down for maybe 15 minutes and if he didn't eat it I'd take it away. He sure did eat the next day!

Hi Lucy!!
Yeah, I thought of that. Gonna hit some gar.sales tomorrow, or maybe the thrifts although I've been trying to stay away from that scene because I've got too much already...and that old, "if you dont buy it, when you see it," always kicks in on me. So if I just dont go, I dont feel I am passing anything up.
But yeah, my cat is way spoiled too. I am tired of it, and I cant afford it. We do love our animals dont we? It's almost like they control us! LOL..
ed to add:
Was it here I read a thread about someone who washes out and reuses ziplocks? I have done it on occassion, but mostly too lazy or dont want to feel I am cheap to that extreme. But those start to cost too. Guess why the idea to get lids again came into mind.

Lucy, yes they do. And the plastic gets yuckie, like greasy after awhile. (I suppose thats why i've thrown them out.) Same with the zip locks with pet food, no?
I dont know...washing zip locks makes me feel sooo poor. Like at poverty level or something!

The answer is simple. Get another cat. That way you won't have left-overs to refrigerate...

LOl bunni. Very good!!
Been thinking of it lately. (My female cat died after 15 years with me, two years ago. Maybe its going on three. Cant remember?) But She was the best. So smart!! Like a human! I am reluctant for another -- this guy was at the ASPCA who poked at me from the inside the cage as I walked past, he jabbed and jabbed me and I knew he should be with me. But he has been a handful since a kitten!) The aspca here has a petting zoo and etc., and sometimes I just go walk around and observe the animals... I almost came home with a really sad dog. But I knew hubby would have put his foot down on that! Said he could hear me telling him to go walk the dog when its me who wanted the DOG! lol

I have always washed the big 1 and 2 gallon ziplocks, even the smaller quart-size most of the time. It takes about 2 minutes to wash out a week's worth and drip them dry. I just don't like to discard things when they can be reused. So call me cheap!

I tried the plastic lids off my Yogurts! Drat! They,,,fit Nothing else! Nothing! Every can I could find! I like the cans you can pullllllllll the lids from. But sometimes I still get batches of the can opener kind.
The .99 cent store has great prices on canned stuff AND the Bagged stuff too. The Swap meet is the BEST,,,5 cans fer a buck! I end up buying their WHOLE inventory most times.
Now the BEST way to illiminate this,,,,,waste, or seconds if you will ( next day) Schrimp! Fresh! heads on friggin' uglies.......These guys leave NOTHING, cept for all the heads! That's the uncooked way,,,,now,,,,,,deep fried,,it ALL goes gulp,,,,,boiled till they turn pink,,,,yummy!
Fresh, actually I Freeeze em' I yell out it's schrimp time guys! and they come a haulin'......but,,,,,,it's frozen! hahahaha, I put like 6 or 7 on the pavement in the HOT sun,,,,,not very long defrosted,,,,,but,,,it drives them CRAZY! they know,,,,,they have to WAIT! actually I thought about that today and pre thawed them in the sun and refrigerated them, till schrimp time,,,,in the afternoon,,,,chomp! hey Jack! no waiting? yup......chow down!
Thinking about this thread,,,,they should package it in toothpaste type tubes,,,I got some peanut butter like that the other day,,,,,just squeeeeeeeeeeeze it on,,,,hahahahaa, self feeders! they just Pounce on the tube and out comes the cat food!

Lucy, I bet some people do it!! Wonder if anyone on board will admit to it? I've done it a few times -- but dont try to make the bag last forever. I saw it or read it somewhere. prolly one of those how to live on a shoestring advice shows or books. lol!
Buying in bulk would be bout a nickel. Probably the best idea!
Yogurts Jack??? I'll have to look into that, thanks!
Road, I guess it about what and where you prefer to spend your time. I dont mean to say its cheap. But it makes me feel very poor to stoop to spending time doing that stuff. - Probably just me! I like to reuse too...but the cat food, like Lucy said it smells and its like you cant get that grease out of the plastic just washing it. and if you put it in the d/w the plastic wears out.

Tessa, you're right, it's all about how you want to spend your time. It's not about feeling poor or anything like that.
I buy plastic bags and Ziplocs and wrap and foil and waxed paper and paper towels and all sorts of other disposable stuff for my own convenience. And I recycle them (unwashed) without a second thought.
No idea what the environmental trade-off would be of saving a tiny, minute amount of fossil whatever-you-want-to-call-it versus using detergent, water and gas to heat the water used to cleaning a Ziploc but that's not an issue with me.
I just want new, clean, unused packaging for my stuff.

How about Planter's Peanuts in a can? Next time you're at the grocery store, slip one of the plastic caps off and see it it will fit a can of cat food. If so, buy it, eat the peanuts (don't forget to get beer too) and presto!, you're in business.

I have only one cat on Fancy Feast but she does tend to eat almost all the contents of the small can...eventually. She's a nibbler, so it might take three or four trips to the bowl during the day.
Anything she doesn't eat gets thrown out after four hours or so.
FF is expensive at shelf price, but between "club card" discounts and coupons I can usually get it at 20 cents a can. So if I waste a little it's no big deal.
It's either that or track down the source of the cat food covers and sell 'em yourself.

iarea: you know what this one does? He likes to mostly lick all the gravy out of them...then he leaves the rest!!! Vet said he's got some plaque on his teeth - so maybe thats why he prefers gravy not chewing...but man..that is major surgery for a cat!! Put them to sleep and all! He said it would cost me - I dont remember but since I heard 100.00 in there somewhere I totally nixed the idea!
When did animals not be able to take care of their own teeth? I know some might have an abnormalacy...but is this big time business for vets now?? sheesh!
nite lucy!
ed to add: he does still eat the dry food inbetween but 'cries' for the canned. he's spoiled, he is.

She does, too. Lick the gravy out of them, that is. But she has an excuse: More than half her teeth are missing. Whoever had her before had some of her teeth surgically removed. And we had to have another removed just this last year.
If there was a cat food that consisted mostly of gravy, that's all I'd buy for her. How come no one's thought of that?

Some of the pouch wet cat foods, Whiskas for one, have some with pate in them as opposed to bits & that's about the closest your going to get to gravy. My cats like it.
I have always been one to save & re-use everything & since living in this trailer I can't do it, no room. So I can't save zip locs, empty jars, tin foil, grocey bags or whatever. I'm even buying all kinds of throw away wet pac cleaning cloths & I'm loving every minute of it. (found some good buys on these at the dollar store)
I'm going to keep it up when I move back into my house, I'm not saving ANYTHING ever again.
We have finally settled the building part of the claim with the insurance company & we are delighted with the settlement.
After 10 months we are just about two weeks away from demolition & then building will start. This is the 7th estimate & that's the lucky number, it's the builder we chose.
He also is a good friend of my brother in law & highly recommended. He lives about a mile from us & he & his wife are real animal lovers, they have a horse, sheep, pet chickens, a duck, three dogs & a cat. My kind of people. The horse is a miniture named Cupcake, she is so sweet & devoted to the sheep. They bought the sheep to keep the horse company. Around here you have to have an acre for each horse, they only have two acres & the house is on one so since they could not have another horse as a friend for Cupcake they got her a sheep.

Hello to all animal lovers!!
I, too am an animal lover and I think my chihuahua is the recreation of the other one mentioned in this thread. He won't eat cold food. It has to be a certain temperature or he just turns his nose up at it.
Please acept this advice in the manner it is intended.
GET THE PET FOOD OUT OF THE ALUMINUM CANS!!
Are you guys aware that when you store pet food in the fridge in the aluminum cans, that some of the aluminum can actually leak into the food? My vet told me never to store the food in the original can in the fridge because aluminum can definitely leak into the food once it reaches a certain temperature. This goes for people food as well.
Storing any food in cans in the fridge isn't safe. Get it out of there!!!

Had to reply to this one too! My cats are finicky too -- they eat mostly dry food with some "people" food thrown in - but we find less than one ounce in dish at a time works best - if it sits, it must not smell "fresh" enough or something - and they will not eat it! LOL! We try to disguise it with a few pieces of human food thrown in or tuna fish water! Of course, the dogs will eat the cat food no matter how old it is! And - I have found the zip-lock baggies work best with the canned food - we wash used baggies too and recycle for other uses (non-food) when used more than once or twice! That is habit because in Italy, recycling of all kinds is mandatory - even have to pay for bags at grocery stores or regular stores if you did not bring your own with you! Everyone gets in habit of even reusing the Styrofoam containers in order to save pennies - and with inflation thanks to the Euro so high, pennies are the least of their problems right now!
