I was advised by the CIO yesterday that he had received a phish email purporting to be an alert from eBay and that it includes a clickable sign-in link that actually goes to a third party.

That's nothing new, I told him. We get dozens like that every week.

Yeah, but listen, he said. This one came FROM INSIDE eBAY, from a genuine eBay IP address and hostname. No possible doubt.

He wanted me to give him an email address that eBay might actually read, so he could report it to the PTB.

Remember the AOL engineer who was arrested for selling usernames to a spammer?

Does eBay have a mole?

AT last! Somebody at eBay has gotten off their dead ass and done something creative. There is hope. When they find this person their punishment should be taking the reins.

One question...what's a "CIO"?

Ok..dont see the relevance to the thread but, ok. I was talking to the MND (man next door) yesterday and he said the same thing..LOL just kidding.

I think all of these latest phishing expeditions are really frightening because the scum bags have learned to speak English. I am not certain that an eBay mole would be any worse than a Turk or Estonian or whatever emptying my PayPal account. The result of all of this is that people will become fearful of using ebay and that's not good news for any of us...the CIO or the MND!

Edited to add:
OOPS: Forgot to ask what is a "PTB"?

this is in the same vein as those "ask a question" e'mails - have had two in the last couple of days asking questions that were either nonsensical or the answer was given in the listing. when i used to answer them, i noticed a marked increase in "phishing" e'mails from eBay immediately thereafter. the only way i'll answer any "ask a seller a question" is - i don't click on the e'mail link - i go directly to the auction and answer from there. so far, so good. but my suspicions about a mole at eBay have been there for a long time.

If I said CTO instead, would that help any?

I believe Teach is referring to Chief Information Officer. AKA high level computer geek.

Truly no offense intended to those who are (much) more computer literate than I.

iarea: That is a very scary scenario indeed!
But if you think about how many web sites, or companies have your personal information and the people who have access to it.....

When I worked for a wireless co in cust service all info, was right at the fingertips from their database. ()They even had my info, and I never had service with them!! - So go figure that one out! And the funniest thing was we were told to tell them to make payment on the internet if they had access to it - (the less they had to pay us to be there, of course :-\) - and some people would say: "no, I dont want to put my info on the internet", but yet that is exactly how and where we accessed their accounts and entered their payments! Of course many didnt have a clue to that, and stated they felt more secure giving it to a rep over the phone...and on their cells phones to boot! .....

I dont think anything is secure anymore! I even worry about Vendio some days, after reading how they circumvented ebay's search engine back when they were AW. - What can really be done in the wrong hands?I dont think I even want to imagine it!

On the bright side, some of the scammers charge less to your credit card than Ebay does. Might be more profitable to deal with a pack of theives than Meg.
