According to one of the local post office clerks, the flat rate box plan has been approved as a two year test. There will be two sizes. One is about shirt box size and one is oversize shoe box size (her definitions).
She said she doesn't know when it's going to start yet. She tried to order some and they weren't available yet. Cost $7.70 for any weight and any U.S. destination as long as it fits in the box.

AWESOME! I'm so tired of going to the website and getting a rate and then going to the PO and getting another rate.

I haven't heard if they were approved, but the sizes are
14x12x3.5
&
11.25x8.75x6
Rate is $7.70 each
I think this is a great idea, this definitely will work well for me. It's about a 3 pound rate, but will take more than 3 pounds...

In many cases this is too damn much. Depending on the rea code, I can ship for anywhere from $3.85 to $6.50. Besides the boxes are not the right size for many things I ship. I weigh my own pkgs & print postage through P/P. As long as the weight is within the framework of say 4# to 5#, it goes for 5#. & P/P figures the amnt for postage & prints the mailing label. You don't have to be a rocket scientest to do this.
