Tried it and it worked, sort of. It did cut down on the smell but not completely gone. Then I sprayed it with Everclear and closed it for a day then put it in the sun for a day. All gone, no more stink!

LOL Kevin! EverClear? seriously?? I'll have to try that one. How much did you use?
I can see it now.
1. Buy 1.75l EverClear.
2. Fill a 4 oz spray bottle with EC
3. Spray inside and outside of mildewed object. Seal up for 7 days.
4. On days 1- 7, drink 1/8th bottle of EC
5.Day 7, throw away the stinky mildewed object and buy more EC.

So. . . what exactly is EverClear? Booze??
Kevin, tell the truth! (I'm really gullible.) Did you really use EC or are you just kiddin'?
Meanwhile, I've downloaded the order form from the company that makes the ZeoCrystals. They recommended the powder, so that's what I'll try. I'll let you all know how it works.

Here's what the company rep told me in response to my question about removing mildew odors from books:
"What I used was the Odor Eliminator Powder. I put the items in a box that had a lid and I sprinkled the daylights out of them with the powder. Then I sealed up the box and left it for a couple of days before opening it up again. Then all I did was "shake" the powder off of the books and papers. It worked well."

Roadsmith, Yes Everclear. Yes it is booze. Very potent stuff at that. However, it does work because it kills everything, mold spores and you if you drink to much. Its 190 proof, thats 95%pure alcohol. DO NOT use this stuff near flames! (NOT kidding here!) I put some in a small spray bottle, like you would for misting house plants, and set the spray to the finest mist and sprayed away. The trunk that I used this on had sat in a basement for decades and you could see the mildew in the paper liner and on everything that was stored in it. I had tried Lysol, sunshine, ZeoCrystals, charcoal, and a few other things. The Everclear did it.
And just so you all know, no I don't drink that stuff. I tried it in my younger days and spent that night sicker than a dog and the next day with a hangover that makes my migraines look easy.
Do let us know how the powder works, and how fast.

Okay. I'm pretty sure now that spraying an old mildewed book with EverClear might remove the odor but it could very well ruin the book! Thanks for the education on what EC is!
And I'm going down the mountain tomorrow to an auction and will look at Ace Hardware for the product. Their website does say they distribute only in the Midwest, but who knows?

Yea, It could do that. If it were mine, I would test on something I didn't care about first. Good luck finding the powder. Keep us/me posted. I hate an unfinished story and I am really interested to see if it works.

Personally, I would put 4 oz of Everclear in a pint of grapefruit juice & take internally. After drinking this, you won't care if there is a smell or not.
