Someone on another thread wrote this:

Here is a tip for all of you who ship to the UK. If you use the big white customs form (form CP 72)on your package, you can goto the www.royalmail.com website and track the package once it arrives in the UK and in most cases will show the signature of the person who signed for the package, especially if they had to pay customs fees. If you ship via Air Mail, it might take a week or so for it to show up on the web site.

Does this really work? When I went there I didn't see anyway to track a package that didn't originate in the UK. Even on the big white forms the tracking numbers end with US and that system wants GB. Please tell me I'm missing something, because I would really like to find a way to track those packages.

How do I track an item sent from abroad?

To use Track & Trace you will first need to find your 13 digit reference number. A valid Royal Mail reference number will start with two letters (e.g. AA), followed by nine numbers, and end with the two letters GB.

For example, a reference number could look like this: AA 1234 5678 9GB

I HAVE asked at the USPS and am always told that there is no way to track these packages.

Sorry I bothered you stopwhining. I didn't realize questions had to be pre-approved.

who said question has to be preapproved?/
i am just suggesting you try USPS as they will know if they can track it .
if you use their express mail ,it is insured up to 250 and trackable, but thats expensive .
or registered mail ,or just insure it for over 50 dollars, then you will get a trackable number for 2.20 dollars??

If you come up with a way (via USPS) to track packages to UK, please let us know.

Hi all,

I sent a package to the UK via Global Express Mail, with insurance in addition to what's included. Online tracking showed the whereabouts all the way to the buyer's home.

Surprised me and my PO clerk. We thought we might lose tracking once the package left USPS hands and entered the Royal Mail system.

The cost was pretty high but my buyer didn't care.

Lucy

Gtootie,
Where are you?? are you a Brit based in UK??
most of us are US based ,and i visited Royalmail,it looks like a private carrier based in UK.
I would think if you are in UK and send a package overseas with the UK custom form, then you can track it with the UK customs form number.
But we are based in US and our customs form is different,if we send you a package from USA to UK,does ROyalmail convert the US number to UK number??
Does Royalmail handle mail for UK post office??
I have a package from Germany once and it is registered mail with a German post office tracking number, our post office will assign a USPS number when they receive it.
When i call the post office,i have to give the USPS number so they can track it in their system.
This may be the case with the UK system, may be you can ask the UK post office what they do with overseas packages arriving in Uk??
Our customs form number read like this -
CP959285191US

I am in the US. Another posted stuck this in another thread. He made it sound as though if we use the large white customs forms (US) you can put that number on this site and track the package once it gets to the UK.

I went to that site, but thought the same thing you did. If you put in one of our tracking numbers, you will get an error. They want a number that ends in GB instead of US.

That's what I was asking. Am I missing something? It looks to me like you can NOT track our packages from this site. But from what the other guy said you can. Read my OP again. I am either reading it wrong, doing something wrong on the site or he doesn't know what he is talking about.

I am also going through a really bad time right now. I'm feeling very down. Some days are worse than others and sometimes I am a little too sensitive.

Gtootie,
if you go to track and trace on royalmail site, and click on the what is a reference number. It takes you to a new page which shows Uk and Overseas mail, the examples they show are all Royal mail packages.
It seems to me if you use Royal mail, then you can track your package.Does ROYAL MAIL HAVE OFFICES OVERSEAS like FED EXP AND UPS ,THEY HAVE OFFICES ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Royal Mail is the UK postal service.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

makes sense, they are quoting first class mail etc like a post office.
I think not every piece of mail is trackable,if you clikc on the reference number required to track, these are all special delivery mail just like ours USPS express mail and overnite delivery mail,so called premium service which costs more.

Royal mail does have confirmed mail shipment services which are the equivalent of our delivery confirmation and are low price. Also they offer a signature confirmation service to the US which is much more affordable than our equivalent service to them.

Hello,

I was the person in the other thread that said you could use the big white customs form to track a package in the UK. I just went to the www.royalmail.com web site and they have just changed their Track and Trace features within the last few days..but it looks like you can still do it.

You will have to goto www.royalmail.com, then click the TRACK and TRACE tab link.
When that page loads you will see a link that says PARCELFORCE WORLDWIDE...that link is near the bottom left of the page. Click on that link and enter the # that is on the big white customs tag and check the box that says INCOMING INTERNATIONAL PARCEL. Then click the box that says TRACK.

I typed a few customs #s on this new site that were mailed about 3 weeks ago and all worked..Here is a sample # to use to see for yourself.

CP881510799US

We ship that package on Nov 8 using Air Mail and the big white customs form. When you view this #, you will see where they assigned it a # with the letters GB on the end and the # will be BLUE. You can click that # and it will show the details of the package (when it arrived in the UK and where it went). You have to remember that your # will not work until the package arrives in the UK.

The small green customs froms will NOT work and Global Priority #s will NOT work. Global Express #s will work.

AN FYI TO THOSE SHIPPING, THE US POSTAL SERVICE CONVERTS FOREIGN COUNTRIES SHIPPING NUMBERS AND PUTS IT IN OUR SYSTEM, EXAMPLE FOREIGN REGISTERED AND EXPRESS SOMETIMES GET OUR FORMS ATTACHED TO THE PARCELS,WHY WOULD THEY NOT DO THE SAME ON OUR EXPRESS AND REGISTERD COMING INTO THEIR COUNTRY, THEY ALL PRACTICALLY USE SCAN BARS ETC, YOU JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHERE IT IS ON THERE WEB SITES TO TRACK.
