We had six inches of snow or more overnight. Mighty pretty scene out there.

The first shot is from our front door. The second is the scene outside my ebay office window. The birds are going nuts fighting over the suet feeder, and a lone quail has been on the snow under the feeder scratching for any leavings the little birds knock down. A great day to stay indoors, watch a little football, and check on my eBay auctions that close tonight.

Go Packers!

Roadsmith, what state do you live in? And I thought it started to snow early in Maine. We had just a dusting this a.m. but all was gone soon after.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

We're in So. Calif., in the mountains above Palm Springs at 6,000 feet. Winter came early this year; our first snow was about a month ago, even before our little newspaper's "guess the date of the first snow" contest closed! We are very very happy to get this moisture.

The snow is gone usually in a couple of days and then we might have 60s and 70s picnic weather for a bit. Very changeable.

It looks like you still have leaves on your trees. Mother nature is confused.

Its gorgeous, Roadsmith. Makes me lonesome for Northern Canada. Miami is in the 80's and very comfortable.

Max: Those trees with leaves aren't deciduous; they are Calif. native live oaks and they don't drop their leaves all at once--just little dribbles all year.

But our first snowstorm, a big one, in October really did it to some of our regular oaks and maples around town. The snow was so heavy that large limbs broke off here and there. One enormous main limb of an oak came within 2 inches of hitting our cars. Close one.

Thank somebody that I don't live where it snows!! As I don't believe in "God" it must be my good fortune. You must live close to Temecula. It was on the 6":00 o'clock news showing the snow there. That is over 100 miles south of Santa Maria.. It never snows here. Tonights low will be 33 degrees, the coldest of the season. May have turn on the furnace

Roadsmith,
That storm that hit you moved to the corner of Nevada and looped back around the Sierras and blindsided us here in the valley last night. The NWS had no warning and did not mention it on the 9:30 update. At 9:45 it was pouring here. It circled on around and went back to Nevada. It hit some people in the desert a second time on the way out.

Sanmar,
You better get that furnace fired up. There's a frost warning for you and Lucy, and the areas all around you are in a freeze warning. Here's what it looks like:

Lucy,
Your lemon tree should be o.k. I don't think your area will ever be hit by a hard freeze. I was surprised to see the frost warning for the coast. Further inland, around Paso Robles, your tree might be in trouble tonight. If it gets too cold there, just holler. My wife brought home a smudge pot from a yard sale a couple months ago. I'll loan it to you and you can warm up everyone on the block

Sparkz,

Your wife must have hit one of Cousin 'Ola May's yard sales...

I remember my Uncle Herman going out in that dark, cold, damp fog to check the smudge pots in his Terra Bella orange groves.

It was spooky seeing him come back to the house. He was very tall and thin. There were big redwood trees in the front yard, the fog swirling around them. He would just appear all of a sudden.

You're right Lucy. They were not made to be used in fair weather. When I was in high school, many of my friends earned enough tending smudge pots to buy their first cars. They were easy to spot. They would smudge all night and by the second period, would be sound asleep at their desks. Since it was an agricultural emergency, most child labor laws were suspended, making smudging the highest paying job in the state for teenagers. With the price of fuel now, just about all orchard protection has turned to wind machines and sprinklers. There used to be a vendor at our local swap meet that would bring a pot out with him on extremely cold days and fire it off to keep warm. Every customer out there would congregate at his space. He was always the first to sell out and pack up and leave.

Sanmar: A friend told us today that they had enough snow in Temecula to make a 5-foot snowman.

Maggie: You're very welcome. When the sun came out a little later, the picture would have been spectacular. Not seen beyond those trees is our huge monolithic Lily Rock, looming straight up in the air but in the photo hidden by clouds. The birds were working awfully hard to find food.

Roadsmith,
I'm curious also. Where is Idlewylde in relation to Palm Springs, North, South, East or West? Many years ago, my company moved a family down there, but I've forgotten the exact location.

Sparkz and Popnrock: Idyllwild is SW of Palm Springs, just over the San Jacinto mountain range about 14 miles as the crow flies (but a lot more by car!). We are the talllll mountains that block the sun from Palm Springs in the afternoon.

Popnrock, I have heard of Winchester--at least there's a Winchester Road between Hemet and Temecula that we take when we have to go to the "bigger city" for the bigger stores.
