This morning when i was still in my pj,someone came knocking on my door,a man wearing a business suit.
I did not bother to answer,so he went to his car across the street and lie down in his car>>
he waited for half an hour and then drove off.
Now what could this be?/
it cant be UPS,USPS,DHL or FED EXP delivery,as he is not wearing any uniform.
He is not a policeman or fireman or pest control man?/
so who could it be and will he be back??
a warrant for my arrest??
for selling tasteless stuff on ebay??

Perhaps a process server? Have you ticked anyone off?

He was probably from the state lottery commission wanting to know where to back the truck in when they deliver your winnings.

Right?

That's very odd. You did the right thing by not answering the door. If I don't know who is at the door, I don't answer it either. I may be paranoid, but with home invasions, and all the other stuff going on these days, it's better to be safe (and paranoid) than sorry.

But the whole act of going back to his car, roll down the window and sleeping does not make me feel comfortable??I hope i am not missing something good like the state lottery?? or my grandaunt died and left me a house full of heirloom to sell on Ebay.

a process server usually is someone serving a
notice to appear in court-lawsuit,your ex-wife pissed off because you aint paying the alimony,or whatever.Being the fact this guy was laying down in his car, indicates maybe he was hiding thinking you might show up at your house. To think it was anyone else, why would they be laying down in the car? As far as your getting collect calls from the county jail, there could be only one explanation--its Jack calling you to bail his mangy ass out.<snicker> in any case if the dude shows up again, call the police-he could also be casing your house to see if anyones home to rob the joint.Burgs are committed more in the daytime when they think no one is home.

This is odd. My mother received several back-to-back collect calls from the jail, too. She didn't accept them, but I find it odd that stop received them too.

Hmm..sounds like a server. I had a buddy who did that while I was doing video depo work.

Crappy job, he got punched in the mouth once. The lawsuit paid for a trip to the Azores.

New here...sorry to butt in...I just wanted to mention about the collect calls from prison/jail. I read in a paper or saw on the news that it is a new scam. They get your permission for what you think is a collect call and it turns out you are giving permission to them to bill phone calls to your bill. People ended up with some hefty phone bills.

THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD INFO.
no,i did not press 1 to give them permission to charge 3.85 or more to my phone bill.
wanna hear a new twist in cc scam-someone hacked into an MBNA customer account online and change the bill to address.
Then he proceeded to place orders (27) in total on Yahoo and elsewhere.
Now the sites are eating chargeback in thousand of dollars and nothing they can do,nor will MBNA do anything for them.
I guess hold on to all your passwords and dont let anyone come near your PC.

you can put a block on your phone to keep inmates from calling (don't ask me how come I know this!)

I guess you'd have to put your state and block inmate collect calls in Google to find out where or call your local telephone company also.

the bad news is - if I ever got locked up I wouldn't be able to phone home.

the good news was that we didn't have a $300.00 phone bill while that was going on.

My DH called home one time from a pay phone outside of a grocery store while he was off on a hunting trip. a 15 minute phone called was something like $50.00! For real! We protested and they finally knocked it down to half - but we learned that you should:

1)ALWAYS ask what the charge will be from the Operator before you accept.

2)The person calling can ask what the charge will be from the phone.

3) Carry a calling card in your wallet.

4) Carry a cell phone.

You can look online and find horrendous charges from pay phone when they call collect.

I don't think I would necessarily wait for them to come back to call the police. It doesn't hurt to request the police department to step up their patrol in your area. Tell them what kind/color of car it was and that they guy acted like he was stalking the neighborhood and you sensed trouble. That way, it is on record and they might question the guy if they see him again, or if someone else calls the cops.

Any time you feel uncomfortable about a suspicious stranger in the neighborhood, call the police. Most of the time, they will have a legit reason for being there, but ever so often, the cops nail a live one on the basis of a citizen's call. We occasionally have shady looking characters knock on our door. As soon as my wife or I open the door (we have a gate and bars on the front porch) the first thing they see to greet them is our Rottweiler. They usually don't stick around long, and they never come back.

I'm with Sparkz, I would not have waited either. If someone knocked on my door and I decided not to answer, and they went to their car and stayed there, I would be on the phone with the police IMMEDIATELY - Heck, I pay my taxes, might as well use some of the services I've already paid for. That's what they are there for.
