I have a bag of these stones and have no idea what they are. I almost threw them away, but thought I should find out what they are first. The black part of the stones is shiny if that's any help. Can anyone ID?

The extent of Ralphie's wisdom never fails to amaze me. LOL! One side almost looks like hematite or shiny coal, but what do I know? Don't answer that, Ralphie. You'll just get yourself into trouble!
BTW, tomwiii, hows the weather down there? I can tell you that after two days of 60+ degree weather, we are sitting in the low 30's. Again, everything is covered in ice since all the rain has froze. I've become accustomed to having a nightmarish drive into work at least once a week. I'm about ready to move in with my father in Port Charlotte. Hurricanes and all!

Pictures are so hard to identify stones by. They look like they could be anything from coal (like you said) to chert to obsidian to???? Got me interested, hope someone with a better eye than mine comes along and identifies the for us.

Cheryl: Ralphie & I have really been suffering lately with the 80F & SUNNY weather we've been subjected to for the past 10 days!
Although, tis been rainy yesterday & today, we sure DO miss that ole 20BELOW + ICE+ SNOW + SLEET we used to enjoy back in good ole Frostbite Falls -- OTOH: the doggy-boy just tain't ever satisfied!
Still say ya got rocks in...

If we want to assume those rocks are from NE Ohio, they probably ARE coal ... If I remember my 6th Grade science stuff, bituminous and anthracite coals are the ones readily found 'round here, bituminous being the lighter weight 'flaky' looking coal, like your bag of rocks, Cheryl

Wouldn't coal be black? These look to have orange in them and I will say they look like pertified wood, to me. Is there any grain that would make it look like wood?
Hematite is usually a gunmetal gray and obsidian is like very thick black glass. Snowflake obsidian has whilte flecks but none of those have orange like I'm seeing in the picture.
Good luck, Louise

They're not from Ohio. I don't know where they are from. Maybe Michigan area. My a friend of mine is a gemologist so I guess I'll have to take my back o' rocks to him.

Tom - I still AM in Frostbite Falls (with Boris Badenuv) and it is -14 today ( windchills -29) and SUNNY - it's too dang cold to snow or sleet! Rain in Florida sounds very good! No rocks like that around here - could they be some kind of agate?

The orange could be iron oxide. Maybe they are a kind of jasper?
Please post your resulting finds, they are cool.
