I am having a terrible time with searches on ebay - does anyone else have this problem. Every other site seems fine but ebay locks up and freezes. Takes forever. This has been going on for a few months now?? Help

Hello,
About 8 months ago I had the problem of Ebay locking up. I had to reboot and then there would be a problem. I have cable, router and modem. I bought a new CPU thinking that was it. It did help some but did not solve the problem.

I replaced the router and the problem was basically fixed.

Ebay has all this so called spy ware and that didn't help either.

If you are on anything between your CPU and the Internet try changing it. Also use another computer if you have one on same line and see results. It is just a process of elimination and you will get no help from Ebay or your internet server.

I have cable and an older IBM laptop. I don't think I'm using a router and I'm afraid I don't know what a CPU is!!! I maybe hopeless here???

There are a couple of threads on the Ebay discussion board (technical issues) about the freeze and time it takes to do searches. This is the link:
http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jsp?forum=87&thread=410400396&modified=1106004932155

It is the adware and spyware. If you run anything that blocks them then you get these problems.

Rather than tweak my computer, I first do my search and got results. Then I open a new window for each item I am interested in (right click), it popped open immediately. Then I just shut the window when I am done.

About six months ago it took me about 45 seconds to access eBay and then about 25 seconds to get to any other eBay page. It turned out to be the Norton firewall. I turned it off and am now using the Windows firewall and haven't had any trouble since. My computer didn't freeze up, just ran very slow, but eBay was the only site on which this happened.

Lady...Ebay has never been 100% user friendly with Internet Explorer. Various problems tend to turn up when their geeks start tinkering with "enhancements". The best way to see if it's a browser incompatability problem is to download another browser such as Opera or Mozilla. When you start having problems, immediately log off with IE and switch to an alternate browser and see if the same problem exists. I've done this many times, and usually Opera will not experience the same glitches that IE sees.

I've got a cable connection and ebay search results load very slowly. Only on ebay. Other websites, pages load fast. If I'm getting aggravated with ebay running slow, I wonder how many of my potential customers are saying the heck with it. I really do think ebay is going to lose their monopoly.

JACK - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "FREE" AOL.

"If you wish to cancel your account, there are three ways to do so:

You may discuss your membership with one of our representatives by contacting us at US 1-888-265-8008. Our representatives are waiting to assist you.

You may mail* your cancellation request to us at:
America Online

You may fax* your request to us at US 1-904-232-4879.

* Please Note: If you choose to write or fax us, please include the nature of your request and account owner's full name, phone number, address, and handwritten signature. Additionally, for account security purposes please provide ONE of the following:

Primary Master AOL Screen Name (this is the first Screen Name in the drop down menu on the AOL login screen)
The last four digits of the payment method used on the account - for your security, please send only the last four digits
The answer to your Account Security Question

Your cancellation request will be effective within 72 hours of receipt. AOL will send you written confirmation. You will not be liable for any additional membership fees after cancellation (although you will be responsible for any other charges you may incur should you access the account prior to account deactivation).

If you cancel near the end of your billing period, you may be inadvertently charged for the next month's fee. In that event, please contact AOL at 1-888-265-8003 to have the charges reversed. No other refunds will be provided, and AOL reserves the right to collect fees, surcharges or costs incurred before your cancellation takes effect."

I was having the same problem. It wasn't until I switched to Firefox that ebay sped up. Then it slowed down again but Firefox isolated the problem to Doubleclick.net.

I went on the technical issue board at ebay and the posters really helped. This is happening to lots of users! If you take out these cookies and do not allow again, then ebay should get better. I went to preferences on my browser to find cookies

ebay.doubleclick.net
ad.doubleclick.net
doubleclick.net
esomniture.com
omniture.com
mediaplex.com
atdmt.com
qksrv.net
adfarm.mediaplex.com
altfarm.mediaplex.com

It sure worked for me!!!! I am so happy now.

there is another post over there that they call the "Dead Dog" thread that is over 300 posts long on the subject that ebay has yet to address. The thought is that ebay won't admit to spy/ad ware. Very frustrating, how many buyers have given up searching due to the slowness we will never know.

good luck, hope this works

I don't kno if is the root of your problem, but when I was using Windows 98, I had this proble. Since I put in XP Pro the problem went away. Alo switched to Firefox. Much faster than IE.

Hey Skizzi how do you block those cookies?

Some of those are the spyware that Adaware continues to find in my computer every single night.

I started using Firefox a couple days ago and I LOVE it except that it hangs and stalls every couple of broswer loads. I have to close the browser and open a new one...and then repeat after a couple times. Other than that I dont have any problems with churning, slow computers, spyware, nothing. But Adaware does find a couple of those on your list (particularly doubleclick) daily. I looked in Firefox and found the cookies section but did not see those in there.

Thanks.

Oh ~ if anyone has any reason why Firefox locks up and hangs like it is for me that would be great. It's the current version 1.0 and I run Windows 98.

I am having one computer problem with an ebay page ... the Feedback Forum page, where you see all transactions that you have not left feedback for yet ....

for the past couple weeks, every time I get on that page, the page/screen jumps and keeps (maybe) refreshing itself; the scroll bar at the side jumps right with it ... over and over again, with no end.

Tried a few different browsers to access that page, and the page still misbehaves this way.

Did all the dumpe cache stuff, toss the cookies stuff, and adaware. ... but nothing's working for me.

Any other ideas?

I couldn't access my bank stuff so I changed all my settings back.
How would I go about getting Opera or Mozilla? Do I need to buy it or something.

Hi HelgaG

Sorry for the delay.... tax time issues!

Now, here is how I did it on Firefox (I'm on a Mac but it should be the same for you)-

1. Pull down the Firefox menu up in the left hand corner

2. Select "Preferences"

3. From that window look for "cookies" and click on the little arrow in front of the word to open it.

4. Click on the button that says "view cookies" you may have to scroll right to find it

5. Highlight the cookie addresses you don't want. Be sure to check the button that says "Don't allow sites to set future cookies"

6. hit OK

Word of caution, it will sometimes highlight cookies you want to keep so be sure you have the right ones highlighted before you click ok.

I had a ton of the spy cookies on it and I've only been using Firefox for perhaps 2 weeks. Thanks ebay!

Good luck!

AO Hell,,,,Well, I HOPE I Got LUCKY! After fifteen minutes of grilling me the Very nice man from I assume India cancelled my account. Over and Over as to WHY I wanted to cancell? I got his account name and he gave me a, I hope it's legit cancellation #. He did keep INSISTING how I had 3 months to go why not just keep our service, For what I reply, I won't be using it. Why have to keep thinking about? He was going to have it cancel NEXT month! I said NO! I want this completed today! Then I was transfered to the LEGAL aspects line,,a recording with all the CHARGES I would incure if I had done this or that or been on line longer than,,,blah, blah,,,,A letter of confirmation of cancellation is coming in the mail in 7-10 days.

I WILL be getting RID of those AOL icons!

Thanks for the heads up on the cancellation nightmares.

Can you believe the very first agent says, Sorry that's not the name on your account, Have a nice aol day, click.

That scared the AO hell out of me! I'll NEVER be able to get off this MTA subway!!!!

I installed Opera a few days ago and so far so good. It's not super fast but better than freezing all the time. Does it get faster if you purchase their ad blocker??
Glassgrl
I really wish I could get it to work the way the guy on OTWA board stated regarding the security settings - that was the fastest my computer has run ever - but I couldn't do half of what I needed to do.
