We have been selling clothing on Ebay since 1998. We are also a PS and used to do very very well.

Been tanking since April 04 for us. Seems every month since then, sales have been declining big time.

You can tell its dead. We did a test. (Have so many shirts piling up) and anyhow we did a test day. We posted 50 auctions up. All are gently used clothing as we have always sold before. Name brands like Nike Golf polo, Greg Norman etc.

So as a trial, we did 50 auctions and started them at $0.99 each. So low and behold, sold 1!

Did a search today on completed, and it is death in that catagory.

So I guess no more buying. Let them run down and then have to pray someone will hire us back to work.

Anyone else dying too?

Hmmmm... but according to ebays 4th quarter report, your category is ranked very high in the list of big money moving around last year:

"Based on Q4-04 GMV, eBay has twelve categories that delivered $1
billion or more in worldwide annualized GMV:

eBay Motors at $11.1 billion;
Consumer Electronics at $3.5 billion;
Computers at $3.0 billion;
Clothing & Accessories at $2.9 billion;
Books/Movies/Music at $2.4 billion;
Collectibles at $2.2 billion;
Home & Garden at $2.0 billion;
Toys at $1.8 billion;
Sports at $1.8 billion;
Jewelry & Watches at $1.7 billion;
Cameras & Photo at $1.3 billion;
Business & Industrial at $1.2 billion."

Might be because of the dismay performance of sellers this month. For the first itime ever I purchased three clothing items from ebay. All from different sellers, all paid for well over two weeks ago. Two are yet to arrive with responses yet to be recieved by sellers and the one that did arrive, as previously discussed here, was drench in a rather horrific perfume ensuring that I will not purchase from said seller again.

Probably 90% of the non food items that I use on a daily basis wee purchased or upgraded via ebay... ok- maybe in even the food since I find many of my favorite spices on ebay as well (ever done store vs ebay price comparison on Saffron?) but one thing that I doubt I will bother to purchase again based on this experience is clothes.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Yeah kind of know what you mean. Some of the stuff we are also buying on Ebay is not in the best described condition. Thus I think it is hurting the dealers who do this for a living.

We just passed 10,000 positive feedback with a 99.8% percent positive mark. So a lot of people truly love the things we sell.

But for some strange reason, it is really slow.

I sell a gently used item. Only one type and I notice that my sales were low before I stopped in October for a rest. I only sell name brands of that type but still it is a difficult sale.

Do you think it is because local clothing stores offer much lower prices than they have? We have one store in particular Kohl's that has terrific sales 50% off retail price. Then on certain Wednesdays they offer 15% more to Senior Citizens. You get name brand clothes for 65% off. No shipping, no waiting and no dealing with sellers that don't ship when they should.

I do see one sweater category that is doing really good this year and last year was a bust.

Another reason that resale clothing stores are popping up all over. I also go to a resale shop that is 50% off everything on weekends and they have new clothes with tags that you can purchase for a buck or two.
They just had a big promotion for Harley Davidson clothes, everything from T Shirts to their leather wear and it was really cheap. The buyer can examine the clothes and again don't have to wait for shipping.

Good Luck..

I have purchased clothing on eBay. Most experiences went well and I am a repeat customer. Some are on my favorite sellers list. I buy for my daughter and her husband as well, (He is 6' 9", so he's not cheap!). I bought boots once, never again though. That's just something you have to try on.

I've purchased a LOT of clothing on Ebay.

I think the trend now is NWT or NWOT though.

It seems like you can get New With Tags clothing for the same price as used clothing these days.

Consumers are becoming pickier...

I once tried to sell some nice brand name used baby clothes just to see, and I did sell a few pieces. What kills it though is the shipping. Unless it is something that is high value and a good deal, the shipping is just too much.

I think baby clothes would be a hard sell unless you do a clothing lot. The other day I stopped at a childs resale shop, everything was 40% off and there were some terriffic buys. Where can you get gymboree for $5.00 18mos. and no shipping. I also get to examine it before I buy it. My idea of good or excellent is different than someone elses.

Unless you have high item designers I think it would be difficult.

I've been selling vintage and gently used clothing on eBay for over 4 years and must say, about 2 months ago, my sales tanked.

I have 2584 transactions with 100% positive feedback. I can't figure out what happened.

Gina- same with us. Vintage and gently used. We too have the exact same problem. That is why I asked the question about the dead sales.

Our feed just went past 10,000 and 99.9% positive (only negs are the ones that did not pay).

Just seems like the bottom just dropped out with no warning whatsoever.

Selling along fine then WHAM. Just a total stoppage.

It doesn't seem to be just clothing. Polished stone items, collectibles and "stuff" are down as well. It seems like someone turned off the lights and forgot to tell us. December was bad but...so far January has been worse! Even the hits are way down. Wish I knew what was going on.

It might have something to do with the "all nude/no clothing" trend that seems to be streaking across the nation......sorry, couldn't resist...

I also have been selling gently used clothing since 1999 and am power seller but sells have declined dramatically this year, even for new name brand clothing. Also, when clothing does sell the prices are so low it is impossible to make a profit.

You know what I think it is? Shopping on eBay has become a real pain in the butt. The items are too repetitive and often times very difficult to filter out of searches. Too much junk to look at over and over again. It's like shopping at Wal Mart with everything laid out in single rows, one right after the other. The reason you aren't selling your stuff is because no one sees it.
