I won't be more specific, but just the nature of the item, it was BRAND NEW and about half of anywhere else on the internet. Also just the way the package arrived.

If something was half the price as a buy it now, that would be suspicious. If it was an auction, that happens from time to time.

If it's brand new, and has a serial number, your local police department can run that number through NCIC and see if it has been reported stolen. If they get a hit, you will have to give it up. But by giving them all the information including his name and address and the detalis of the transaction, you could help his local PD solve a crime. If it turns out to be something major, such as a large burglary or truck hijacking, you could be in for a substantial reward from an insurance company. It's a gamble you will have to decide for yourself.

Maybe you just got a good deal from an inexperienced seller. Sometimes people come across items cheap and sell them cheap (gifts, closeouts, etc)

First you said it was hypothetical,,,,,,NOW you fear you are in possesion of stolen property bought on e bay? Contact e bay,,,,,give them the auction number and have THEIR Police Check it out,,,,,,OR you could without being DIRECT give the number of Some OTHER auctions from the seller and others here could investigate it.......??????

Did you purchase the object in an auction, buy it now, or out of a store? What are the details of the purchase? What is the nature of the object you purchased? I see things all the time, new and used that are sold at twice the price of another object or purchased at half the price of an identical object.
Certainly a lot of stolen merchandise is sold over eBay, but you would expect that with millions of auctions every week.
In answer to your hypothetical question, if I thought an object was stolen I wouldn't buy it. I certainly wouldn't buy it and then turn the seller into the authorities. Also, with your refusal to give any details I don't really see why you asked the question.

I know of a few items that are always listed that are clearly stolen. If you turn them into ebay, they will laugh at you. Your only real chance of redemption will be to contact the rightful manufacture of the item to report it. They might be able to go through the chains and get the thief where it hurts.
