I sold a book a month ago. Now the buyer contacts me about the fact that the book had such a bad mildew odor they threw it out upon receipt.
I and another person read this book before selling it and I would have notice an odor.
I discard any books that I find have any odors, including smoking odors.
They already negged another seller for the same complaint without contacting them first.
Now, they say it was my book not the other seller and they left that neg by mistake.
So they will certainly neg me (my first). Thank goodness, I haven't left feedback for them yet. The other seller had left feedback first.

If you refund them, I'd like to invite you to a poker game
Negs aren't that bad a thing; you'll probably have others. Just repond to their neg with something sensible, and potential bidders will take the neg with a grain of salt.
Neg the hell out of them after they leave theirs.
I mean, if it did in fact have a mildewy odor, they could have put it in a plastic bag and contacted you to return it. Since they no longer have the book to return, PayPal won't force you to give them a refund, and any other payment method is yours. Jerks like that will neg you even if you give them a refund.
Don't allow yourself to be a victim of feedback extortion.

Email him back and tell him that you are only human and can make mistakes like everyone else. When you listed the book, you were in a hurry and put the wrong price on it. Only after you shipped it did you discover that it was worth much more. Then send him a bill for another $25.00.

It's not the neg that worries me as much as having a problem with paypal or ebay. I really don't want to have my paypal or ebay account locked over this. I'm really depending on my ebay money right now.
The book was sent sealed in a new plastic bag, all they had to do was put it back in the bag and reseal it with tape. I would have sent a post paid mailer if they would have let me know they weren't satisfied.
I would have given a full refund plus shipping if they had just returned the book. I had another bidder for this book.
Plus I alway re-check things just before I package them, I would have noticed any odors.

Don't refund without return of item.
Sounds like to me that they are running a scam with other sellers also. (if the neg was left by mistake, mutaul feedback removal process would have removed the neg)
If feedback haven't been exchanged, it is doubtful they will neg you because you will simply neg them back in return.
eBay and PayPal won't have a "problem" with you on this. At their most assertive, they would insist that you provide a refund upon return of the item. Well, by the buyer's own admission, he can't return the item... NEXT!
eBay's not going to be too pleased about the buyer's supposedly leaving a neg for the wrong seller and not offering to retract it either
I would not worry another minute about this. The buyer made it simple for you by throwing away the book. Any negative you receive is unfortunate, but "let it go."

Greatlakes, the book didn't have an odor and the buyer didn't throw it out......he is scamming you, trying to get his money back AND the book.
When you neg him be factual, concise, use a calm "tone". Any smart potential buyers look at feedback ANSWERS as more revealing than the feedback.

So true! A reasoned response to a negative feedback can be better evidence of your professional selling expertise than a positive feedback.

Yeah, right! As long as you used delivery confirmation, you have no worries with paypal or ebay. Be sure to block them, and get ready to give them a neg in return. You sort of get used to negs, as others have said they are really not that big of a deal. No matter what you do, you are going to get them.
I had a customer this week who said I shipped the wrong title, and they wanted me to ship something else. I told them they needed to return the video, then they told me they already sold it to someone else, but still wanted a free video! Yeah, right.

Botton line,
No refund unless item is back in your hand. Who cares about feedback? No one. Most bidders don't even read it.

I always ask for the item back when they complain about it being defective. Half the time if they think you will want the item back in order to get their refund, they change their mind about it being defective. I had one lady tell me that she had received three bad DVDs from me,when I ask her to send them back to me I never heard from her again. Most of the time I can tell by the tone of their e-mail if they got a bad product or not. They seem to pull that more at Christmas than the rest of the year.
