What's up with everyone wanting to send stuff by Priority Mail to Canada? All the shipping quotes I've gotten in the past few weeks have been by Priority. Anymore, I almost have to beg sellers to send Air Mail. Is there some promotion going on? Last week I bought a pair of old doll shoes that are about an inch long. Shipping to the U.S. was listed at $2.00. To make this short, the seller wanted $16.00 for Priority Express Mail. Nowhere in their auction do they state that they only offer Priority Express to Canada, yet they only ship to the U.S. and Canada. I tried to reason with them and get them to send them in a bubble envelope but they wouldn't budge, so I had to pay them the amount they asked for. What's a buyer to do?

If they are sending it via Global Express it's because Paypal requires a online tackable and signed for...form of delivery to outside the U.S. That's the only way a seller is protected.

If I have this wrong someone please set me straight....

You hit the nail right on the head! Paypal as well as Merchant Services, i.e Visa MC are forcing people to quote shipping in trackable formats and Global EMS is the only one that is trackable outside the US.

there is no such thing as canadian priority mail, only global priority mail which is not trackable and EMS which is trackable.
But does Paypal offer any seller protection when an item is going to Canada??whether it is trackable or not??

"Shipping to the U.S. was listed at $2.00."
Answer;
If this is factual I would report them to Ebay with the appropriate e-mails. If any seller don't do what they say they will do in their add then they need an "Adjustment"

Krafty - if they are anything like me, they have found that airmail packages only have a 50/50 chance of arriving and that Global Priority has a better success rate. Unlike me though they are still experimenting with that special brand of seller masochism. I recently stopped selling to Canada because of the abysmal completion rate.

As a seller I can say that I usually will only ship outside the US via Express and here is why.

1. It is trackable.
2. First $100 dollars of insurance is included.
3. I can print the postage at home with the customs form.
4. I do not have to wait in line at the post office, I just walk in and drop them off.

Keep in mind that airmail letter is not insurable only airmail parcel or surface parcel plus I have to hand write a customs slip if I mail either of these ways. Either way I waste time standing in line at the post office.

As a buyer outside of the US you have two options, one is to only buy from sellers in Canada, and two is to buy from everyone but ensure you check on the postage before you bid, again Canada is not in the US so my US shipping listed in the auction would not apply to you.

That is because you ship everything without customs forms which for Canada, will not cut it. It only use Air Mail and have never had a problem as long as the customs form is completely filled out and accurate.

And as far as seller protection for PayPal to Canada, there is none what so ever no matter how you ship. Where is TOMWii when you need him? HEY RALPHIE, post the PayPal protection policy for international shipments here.

stone,

I use customs forms for Canada, and I don't think I'm much better than 50/50, if you count a 3-month transit time as the equivalent of an item not showing up.

UPS only to Canada from now on, which will in effect keep Canada off my "ship to" list, especially since every Canadian (but one) that I've shipped to has asked me to call it a gift and declare its value as $25 (while insuring for more than $200).

The customs fees in Canada are outrageous, and the buyers there think it's my fault somehow.

Canadian buyers are maybe 3% of my business, but 30% of my headaches. Who needs it?

Thank you for letting me vent

When I first started selling I sent everything global priority. Then I realized that air letter post was cheaper. For me to send an identical item to Canada that I send to the US is the same postage. So then I wrote my Guarantee which is in my about me page which has a link from my payment and shipping details. It explains everything in black and white I ask them to click the about me page read my guarantee and if they agree with it please bid. I am keeping my fingers crossed I have had no missing packages in 5+ years selling internationally. I do put customs forms on all my packages, which BTW takes about 4 seconds to fill out because I use address labels. I have lost one package in the US. I have had packages that were taken from the buyers porch and in an office but with eDC on it and I didn't refund.

Seller Protection Update
Notice Date: May 13, 2005
Estimated Effective Date: June 17, 2005
Beginning June 17, 2005, the PayPal Seller Protections Policy will be applicable to payments between buyers and sellers in the UK, U.S., and Canada. Additionally, the Seller Protection Policy will require that a payment include a confirmed address in order to qualify for Seller Protection. This does not change the requirement that the payment is marked as eligible on the Transaction Details page for the Seller Protections Policy to apply to the payment.

Yeah, this NEW policy for the SPP is both GOOD news and BAD news, especially if ya ship only via the USPS:

The NEW rules do NOT eliminate the necessity for online tracking, and, the ONLY online tracking available via the USPS is with GLOBAL EXPRESS MAIL --

COMPARE:

3lbs/15oz to the UK:

Airmail Letter Post = $23.10

vs:

Global Express Mail = $35.75

/or/

3lbs/15oz to CANADA:

Airmail Letter Post = $11.75

vs:

Global Express Mail = $19.25

The NASTINESS LEVEL will reach new heights after this goes into effect -- have FUN with yer CANADIANS who will now INSIST on paying with PayPal &, at the same time, insist on the CHEAPEST shipping method.

Methinks me-N-Ralphie will end all NON-USA transactions just so we don't go BONKERS!

assuming bidder is not using stolen credit card with paypal, seller can ask him to purchase insurance either thru USPS or Private insurance such as U-PIC.
In this case,if item is not received, insurance carrier will pay(if he chooses to co-operate with you on filing claim)

INSURANCE tain't NO help if PePe LePeau from Merdebreath, QUEBEC, is pulling a PayPal scam on ya!

It's starting to become TOO CONFUSING to use PayPal anymore -- ya need a lawyer just to figure out all the baloney needed just to protect yerself from the pretzel-chokers out there...

Barrister Ralphie, OBM, CCE, KOG says:

1) ONLINE TRACKING: is necessary! Well, for UPS, that's "OK," except for the fact that UPS charges 1Kabillion pretzels to cross a BORDER! So, that's a MESS!

So, with USPS, as far as we can tell, you have to use GLOBAL EXPRESS MAIL -- have FUN trying to get paid for THAT!!

2) CONFIRMED ADDRESSES ONLY: so now we're back to the CONFIRMED ADDRESSES -- except now for CANADA & the UK!!

3) WHAT ABOUT over $250??

Oy! Vey! Bark! Growl! Burp! Faht!

<<assuming bidder is not using stolen credit card with paypal>>

Assuming the card is not stolen, they can use Bidpay. The fee they pay will still be much less than the extra cost of EMS just to obtain tracking.
