My part beagle mix has been throwing up of and on since Saturday morning. Would like to wait until Tuesday for my regular vet. there is an emergency clinic but if possible would like to wait. Anybody know what I could give her to calm her stomach??

you can give a dog a child size dose of anything (children's medication preferribly)if the dog is big enough. Immodium or whatever works for nausea. About the only thing you can't give a dog is asprin unless it's buffered.

However, if the dog is not keeping anything down you need to take that dog to the vet immediately. They dehydrate easily. Pull up some skin (loose pinch) on it's back and if it doesn't go right back down it's dehydrated. They get dehydrated and they die.

Check your dogs gums above it's teeth and if they are white instead of pink the dog is highly stressed and has high blood pressure.

Vomiting can be from a lot of things - from serious to not so serious. I wouldn't take a chance on saving a few bucks to wait for the vet to open. All vets have emergency service or at least one in town will.

My daughter is a vet tech and she's always helped me out with my yorkies. I have one that has a spastic stomach and he throws up about once a week and I have to give him medicine for it when he starts, otherwise he throws up until he's vomiting blood.

Her yorkie got into the garbage not too long ago and chowed down on a chicken without her knowing about it. She started vomiting and was dehydrated in a day and had to have an IV put in.

Parvo I think causes vomiting. I'd be very careful about self diagnosing & medicating unless you know the cause.

The worse thing you can do when a dog is throwing up is to try and force food or water down them. You can't re-hydrate a dog with water like humans do.

So my best advice would be: if the dog has been throwing up longer than 8 hours (and it sounds like he/she has) I would call the Vet IMMEDIATELY.

I agree with glassgirl. My dog was throwing up like that. Thank god I had a vet that i could call like a people doctor. She called me back on the weekend. First thing like a human, you have to stop the cycle of vomiting. Just like when it happened with my son. Stop offering fluids for atleast 2 hours. Then only offer it in small quanities. She suggested putting ice cubes in the water bowl. That way she could only drink a little at a time. A dog can't go on for days without fluids.

See a vet as soon as possible. If you do go to an E.R. Vet, make sure it's a good one. You could call first. ( I did that too) They are usually really good at giving you helpful info over the phone. Please let us know what happens with your poor pooch

thanks for all your help. I called the Emergency Vet and they told me to bring her in.
Drove all the way down there and the DR is in surgery for 2 hours so drove back. Called another emergency vet and they are all jambed up. Called another vet and he said to try some rice and see if she keeps it down. If not, then bring her in. So will try it. She drank a lot of water yesterday and had her dinner but about 5AM up it came.
Sorry to bother you all with this but there is always some one the EO who knows what to do. I appreciate your input

I always keep m-wave rice in the cubbard, as FAT-BOY has about the most delicate tummy of any BEAST I've ever seen in my life -- he's the original BarfMeister!

About 1 year ago, he really gave me a scare. Started hurling around 11:00PM and kept it up ALL NIGHT! I sat on the kitchen floor all night with him. He'd sleep in my lap...then, after an hour or two, he'd get up & puke in a corner & then crawl back in my lap. THIS went on ALL NIGHT & I was a wreck! We were at the VET'S office right at opening at 8:00AM -- got a shot & he was fine...BUT...donna want to go through THAT again...

Hey Tom - Glad Ralphie recovered. Seems Lucky is much better and barKing instead of barFing.
Gave her rice and chicken this morning. Hope she doesn't get too used to that. Will throw in some dog food to the mixture for dinner.
Thanks again to everyone for your comments and advice.

I got an old cat that is good on the barf thing. I give her hair ball eliminater a few times a week, but I think most of it is something she eats outside.
