Goodmorning everyone . Is this little redish brown stone Red Jasper ? It's on top of a small 925 silver pill box . Also any chance someone eyes are better than mine and you can make out what the stamp reads. I can make out Mexico around the circle of words but not the first part and 925 .Thanks !

It does look like jasper. But there is a small chance that it could be red coral. You need to compare to some coral. or at least quality photos.

It's Carnelian (or Cornelian), IMO, which is a form of Chalcedony.

it is not carnelian. the piece is totally opaque. like jasper. carnelian is a little transparent this one is not. if it was i would agree

Since the silver covers the back, transparency would be hard to tell. I have several pieces of carnelian jewelry that are identical to this setting. Same reddish-brown color as well and the transparency isn't as apparent due to the setting. It would help to see the entire piece to judge style, etc. Carnelian is used a lot in Thai and other oriental jewelry.
Edited to add: I agree that it could also be red jasper. I don't think it's red coral, though.

Could you get a side view of the red stone, maybe with the sun or a bright light on the opposite side? In other words, a view that doesn't look down into the silver base. That might help.

Good idea, Roadsmith. Now why didn't we think of that?

Hi all ,Sorry it took so long to get back...I've been out all day looking for a suit for my brother. His long term live in girlfriend grandmother past away and he didn't have the money to buy a suit so he called me to save him.Saving his butt was at least for a good reason this time. I think all families have the way ward one that always needs saving . He's mine. Thanks so much for helping me again ...lol I'm your way ward friend that always needs help. Anyway whew ..long winded today. I think after looking at the pictures on eBay that Cheryl is right cause it has a very small patch of a creamish color on one side like most the Carnelian do . Heres a picture of the cream spot .

Having seen this new photo with the creamish spots in it. i am inclined to agree with you. this is typhical of heat treated carnilian. sometimes there is an area in a stone that does not treat well and leaves the creamish looking spots.

I love Carnelian jewelry. Even more I love the Blue Chalcedony. It's such a brilliantly lovely color. Be sure to use the word Chalcedony in your description. Carnelian is a form of it and Chalcedony gets a lot of search hits.

The 2 letters and numbers with the hyphon at the top are the smith's registered hallmark All silversmiths in Mexico have to have registed hallmarks. The word in front of Mexico is either Hecho or Made. A lot of these stampings are struck very poorly.
