I bought this necklace from a rummage sale with the idea of giving the beads to my 4 year old granddaughter who loves threading them. But when I got home and checked it, I thought it was really pretty, and wondered if it would be worth listing. It is obviously just costume jewelry, there are no marks. 4 strands with some pretty elongated beads, not sure what they are made of, but the are very nicely colored.
I would appreciate any help, I have NO IDEA about jewelry.

they could be real semi precious stones, but with such a range of colors, some could have been dyed.

they look like real stones, try taping some of them on your teeth,if it feels like glass or stone then you know they are not plastic.
I think they are real tumbled polished stones, not an old piece, probaly importated.
I sure would not give it to a 4 year old that is for sure unless you want her swallow the beads after she breaks the necklace apart. JMO

I tried the "tap test" and they are not plastic. They look more like stones than glass, but I am not sure. How would you describe it?
gasolineguys: My granddaughter has been threading beads for about a year. She doesn't put them in her mouth. She gives what she makes to people for gifts, and then asks for them back because she wants to thread the beads again. I think I'll find her some different ones, I think it would be a shame to cut this necklace up.

I think they are from the 50-60's.

I would list them as to the best of my knowledge these are all natural stones, some being semi precious. Tumbled polished and a very nice bit of nostalgia.
They would look good on a belly dancer lol Blah Blah

List the necklace. Give the 4 year old grandaughter a couple dozen fresh baked chocolate chip cookies instead. You'll both be happier.

It was probably done by a beader. There are to many good beads to be manufactured. The colors are absolutely beautiful and you have done a good job in reproducing those color.

I would try putting it on and list it as fruit salad. Now some might object to using fruit salad but I would give it a try. Maybe Cheryl will come in and give you some ideas.

Fruit salad is a term used in jewelry as bright and colorful beads as the fruit in fruit salad.

Wish I could help, but without seeing it in person, it's hard to tell. They look like glass to me partially because the long beads are very uniform in shape. Partially because some of the colors just seem off. They could be dyed.

Don't call it fruit salad, though. Fruit salad refers to colorful "molded" stones in glass or plastic. You can say "fruit salad colors" or something of that nature. Libra is right in saying the colors are right for fruit salad but, again, the pieces need to be molded to be called fruit salad.

Thanks for all the suggestions. They really do look like stones to me that have been tumbled. Some have dimpled area. My daughter used to collect stones and tumble them, and these look very similar.

"I tried the "tap test" and they are not plastic."

what you should actually do is chew on them for awhile and see if they taste like glass or stone,THEN you know they are not plastic

Real stones cannot be tumbled and finish up with such uniform shapes and sizes as these nor can real stones be tumbled and wind up perfectly round. Look like glass beads strung by a beader To me anyway.

Don't want to slag anyone's speed typing.

But when I read that bit I got a picture in my head of someone doing that, so I made a little picture to illustrate that thought.

I checked this auction, and the beads look just like mine. What is "polished lucite"?

My husband looked at the necklace and he is sure it is plastic. Any more ideas? I just don't know what to call it.

Well, Lucite is a type of plastic. So, polished plastic? Lucite is a hard plastic so you may hear the tap of glass against your teeth when it's polished. The stones are just too regular to be genuine stones. I agree with buyhigh on that one. Are the "stones" cool to the touch? The best way to tell is to put it up against your face. Plastic will warm to your temp. Stones and glass will be cool.

Edited to add: They were wrong in describing it as "fruit salad". Here is a pic of an actual fruit salad piece:

Notice how the stones (or plastic) are molded into shapes.

Thanks Cheryl, the link was a real help. I am pretty sure now that they are polished Lucite. They do warm up, and as my husband pointed out, they are not heavy enough for glass. They sure don't look like plastic, but I had never heard of Lucite, and the veining of colors in them is really pretty.
