I don't know if you've been watching the news, but this just came in from the National Weather Service:
Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 8:30 PM PDT on June 14, 2005
... A tsunami warning is in effect for the coastal areas from the
California-Mexico border to the north tip of Vancouver Island
British Columbia inclusive...
Earthquake data...
preliminary magnitude 7.4
location... 41.3 north 125.7 west... or 90 miles NW of Eureka, CA
and 300 miles NW of San Francisco CA at 751 PM PDT.
It is not known... repeat not known... if a tsunami exists... but a
tsunami may have been generated. Therefore persons in low lying
coastal areas should be alert to instructions from their local
emergency officials. Persons on the beach should move to higher
ground if in a warned area. Tsunamis may be a series of waves which
could be dangerous for several hours after the initial wave arrival.
This tsunami warning includes the entire California coast. Estimated
time of arrival in the San Francisco area is approximately 923 PM
PDT.

Good grief. At first I thought this was a joke, Sparkz. An earthquake that close to land sounds ominous for a tsunami, doesn't it.

Not a joke Roadsmith. Yahoo news says evacuations are in progress from low lying areas in the Crescent City area. I cuss these mountains that surround the valley and hold the fog in during the winter, and the heat in during the summer, but with something like this, I'm sure glad they are there.
The report I posted above was from the San Francisco district. It's now on the central coast sites.

WHEW!!! A close one.
Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 9:30 PM PDT on June 14, 2005
... The tsunami warning that was in effect for the coastal areas from
the California-Mexico border to the north tip of Vancouver Island
British Columbia has been cancelled...
The strong earthquake off the far northern California coast has not
produced a tsunami... thus the warning has been cancelled.
Local emergency officials will have the final authority as far as
lifting any evacuation orders along the coastal areas.

RE: Tsunami Warning Cancelation - and here I was just thinking of throwing a last minute Tsunami party on the roof.

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

You can probably get away with using wax in San Diego, or Idllewilde, but here in the SJV I wouldn't trust it. When the temps get up to 110, it can get pretty pliable if it's used on a high shelf or close to the ceiling. Personally, I use a Dremel drill with a small bit to drill a hole through the plate or turine or whatever, and then drive a nail through the hole to anchor it to the wall or china cabinet.

thank goodness the tsunami didn't come about. Watching the late news here they showed some brainiacs who drove right onto a beach (can't remember where) thinking it would be a fine place to see the waves. Helllo? Didn't they ever hear of Indonesia and their tsunami?

Classic...That's right. There are normally about 300 in any given week, but this week was especially active. That's the reason everyone in California wears rubber sole tennis shoes. Otherwise, it would shake the fillings right outta our teeth.

Most of the earthquakes are so tiny that you don't feel them at all unless you're right on top, and then it might just be a quick bump or shake. The big ones we can hear as a low roar, usually, then the shake, rattle, and roll. I've experienced only three bigger ones in the last many years, but their bark is usually worse than their bite.
Lying in bed I might feel a slight quake about 4 a.m. (odd that it often happens then) but most people would sleep right through it.
Small price to pay for not having the humidity, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods elsewhere!
As reassurance, we're told that all those tiny quakes are relieving pressure so that a big one may not be sooooo big.

WOW!! I really thought it was joke. I was watching poker on ESPN2 & it broke in with an announcement of the threat of a tsunami on the coast of CA. I guess it didn't happen as I am still here. Lucy would nt have to worry as there is a ridge of mtns between SLO & the sea. Not the same here in Santa Maria. We are about 10 miles from the shore line but it is as flat as a tabele between here & the ocean, I think we are about 100 ft above sealevel.
