At least competition for paypal. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is preparing to launch a similar platform later this year:

Now see... that is one I would sign up for. Personally I think that right now Google is about the only entity that could provide legit competition to PayPal.. and eBay for that matter.

I've never had a Paypal account, and never will. I don't agree with their ethics or business model. However, when Google launches their service, I will be among the first to sign up. Once they get it rolling, I wouldn't be surprised to see them exploring the online auction concept.

Spark,

I agree about Google. What makes me think I'd want to sign up? Hmmmm. Google gives off an aura of competence. Hard to put into words, but so far what those people have produced works and works well. We shall see.

How can you not love a company that looked at what was going on around them and took on the motto "Do No Evil"?

Have to be careful with that one, sounds like a doctor's oath and we know the imcompetence of some of them......
But I will say I'd jump on google bandwagon in a heartbeat.........PayPal who? x.com who? always free when?

Again...

As with Greencrap, why does one assume that Google, which has NO financial business experience, will succeed where:

CitiCorp, the largest financial institution in the US FLOPPED...

USPS, with generations of experience handling moola, FLOPPED...

WESTERN UNION, with loads of experience transferring funds, FLOPPED...

The biggest problem with any system is, obviously, FRAUD!

If you ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS (ask any merchant account holder), then you ALSO ACCEPT the RISK of crooks and FRAUDULENT transactions...

PayPal does everything it possibly can to dump that RISK onto the shoulders of us sellers, while, at the same time, trying to deny doing so.

But? How else could they possibly survive?

Do you think that Gargle-Pay will be ANY different in respect to this major flaw in the system??

If you do, then please call Ralphie: he has some beautiful (tho slightly damp) homesteads here ion FL for ya!

Thanks for the info I am ready to sign up now - PayPal has only gotten worse since being purchased by eBay. LET THE COMPETITION ROLL!!!

I think Google has the presence on the WWW to make such a site a success. Does anyone know where GOOGLE'S home base is?

I wonder if eBay will restrict use of a competitor’s services on their site?

GO TO THE LINK BELOW TO ENTER GOOGLE’S FORUM Then where ever appropriate, encourage Google to set up such a online payment program to compete with Paypal, and tell them you will readily sign up and use such.

ALSO, go to the link below, which will allow you to e-mail Google direct, and encourage them to go with their own online payment program. And, as stated above, tell them that you will readily sign up for the program and use it.[/b]

I think they are still in Palo Alto. Here is their history if you are interested.

There is a 60 minutes story that gets rerun on them every so often that is great.

Google has enough fund to buy a bank, but thats not the issue, the issue is where are its prospective customers who will use the payment system regularly?
Unfortunatley for Google, the best customers of such service are on EBAY and with PAYPAL.
Buying a bank will move things faster-opening account, issuing debit and credit cards, fund transfer, foreign exchange transactions, clerance etc.
Getting mom and pop websites to sign up to offer Google Wallet should not be too difficult, the big question is how to get into Ebay??
When Ebay has billpoint and Paypal was independent,Ebay allowed Paypal to come into the site every day to insert Paypal logo on item page, would it allow Google to do the same??

Stop - as much as it would like to, ebay cannot control the payment methods that it's users use. They can no more keep their users from using Google than they can keep them from using their own merchant accounts. The big thing will be how quickly Google works with services like Works, Vendio, etc to enable the integration between them.

As for how Google is going to get customers... Hell, they have not even formally announced and you've already got half a dozen people here in this thread ready to give it chance. They have a very strong brand name. It will not be at all difficult for them to capitalize on it.

Ebay cannot ban Google from coming to its site, but it can ban Google from altering the pages by inserting logos and words, after all these are Ebay property.
I dont know how much influence Vendio/Ansdale going to wield on the bidders, how many sellers use Vendio and Ansdale,i bet not that many in the Ebay unniverse of sellers??I have not encountered one single seller who uses either one.
As for the ones who responded and said they want to sign up,once again these are sellers and after they sign up,they have to make the bidders to use the system, they are risking the possibility that some bidders may not bid (like they dont want to sign up and use Google),or they have problem signing up with Google,or they just dont want to make extra efforts of using a different payment system(some bidders bid on many items and they just like to go to one place to make payments ).
But given the size of the Google warchest,it can do the same as Paypal used to do-offer a 10 dollars bill for each new account and another 10 for referral,or fund a new account with a free 50 dollars deposit.
Who gains and who loses?
The shareholders of Ebay and Google will be losers!!

I was so thahkful and hopeful the day C2it launched.

It was so obvious.....with all the money and sheer power Citicorp has it was easy to think they would have stomped little independent paypal(Ebay didn't own them just yet) in the mud.

CITICORP FAILED MISERABLY AND THEY SHOULD BE EMBARRASED AND ASHAMED.

They designed a crappy system, their site constantly froze and was completely unstable. Funds would mysterious float round then show up a week later. It was pathetic. They made no real effort into making it work.

Online banking was just starting to become mainstream. Had they started out by creating accounts for all citibank members they would have hit the ground running with 10's of millions of accounts on day one!

I hope whatever Google makes works. But the only people I think would give paypal a run for their money would have to be a large national bank like Wells Fargo, BofA, Washington Mutual etc etc.

They could even market it like the cell phone companies do......... like no transaction fees to other Wells or BofA account holders etc etc

Someone out there has to do SOMETHING.
