My laptop backlight bulb has been out for a month - so every time I wanted to check VD or Ebay I had to run upstairs to my desktop.
Now I know to turn off my LCD screen whenever I'm not using it. Just enabling the screen saver is not enough! I see that Toshiba actually has a plug in that will turn off the screen.
The LCD (CCFL) screen uses a lightbulb about as big as a toothpick and it's a B**** to replace. I still don't have it in exactly right but it will do until I do the girly thing at a computer shop. The girly thing is batting your eyelashes and doing the "oh poor me & gee whiz" routine in case you didn't know.
I thought it was the inverter but I replaced that and my screen was still black. So I had to order a bulb ($9.99 thank goodness) and had my DH maintence tech solder it for me today.
TURN OFF YOUR LCD screen when you're not using it!

my goodness - you sell MUCH more than I do! You have to decide you're worth it.
The new laptops that have the integrated wireless function is much nicer than the one I have with the wireless card sticking out of it AND they pick up wireless signals a lot better.
I almost justified buying a new laptop but then for $30.00 fixed mine. The inverter is what usually goes out but I haven't found out if that was what my problem was. My screen just started flickering one day and in my attempts to pull everything off my laptop I think I burned my bulb out.
ltray came over last week with her Gateway laptop and showed me how someone hacked into my system -firewall and all. With her laptop she was able to pick up 3 different connections until she secured my router. I told her then she needed to document it and write it all down for all of the VDer's.
Even with my connection secured she was able to obtain a signal from 2 other computers. I'm pretty close to a hotspot so I wonder if I even really need a router if I upgraded. But then I guess that would be stealing bandwidth.

lol glassgrl ... I think I could bat my baby blues all day at a computer shop, and that still wouldn't get me an affordable laptop set up AT my house ... they'd just bat their baby blues back at me and say, "here's your bill ... pay it."

Thanks for the post Glassgrl - good advise - I did that with my old laptop too. I just got a newer (not new) IBM and it is wonderful. No more Window 98. I think I will just plug in another monitor, keyboard and close this laptop up to save the wear and tear.
