Today, at eBay Live! 2005, Bill Cobb, President of eBay North America, announced a number of changes we will be making to the feedback system later this year.

These changes include:

1. Neutralizing feedback left by members who don't participate in issue resolution processes. We believe that members unwilling to participate in processes designed to help resolve issues, such as the Unpaid Item process or the Item Not Received process, shouldn't be able to impact another member's reputation. After this change is implemented, if a member leaves feedback for a transaction and does not participate in these processes, eBay will neutralize their feedback. This means the rating (whether positive or negative) will not affect the recipient's feedback score. While the feedback comment itself will remain, it will include an administrative note from eBay indicating that the feedback doesn't count towards the member's total score.

2. Removing feedback from users who are indefinitely suspended within 90 days of registration. We believe that members who are indefinitely suspended within 90 days of registering on eBay were never truly members of the Community, and so their feedback comments and ratings should not count. We will automatically remove feedback (positive, neutral, and negative) left by such users.

3. Requiring new members to complete a tutorial before leaving neutral or negative feedback. This change will require all new users (members with a feedback score of less than 10) to complete a short tutorial before leaving neutral or negative feedback. We hope that the tutorial will educate new members about the feedback system as well as ensure that they are aware of the various communication tools available to them prior to leaving feedback for their trading partner.

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

I'm not quite sure how #1 is going to work out (neutrals aren't all that much better than a negative), but I definitely like #2 and #3.

How many people actually read feedback as long as the percentage is good. Since nuetrals don't effect the overall rating I think I have to disagree with you on that one Replay.

Besides - I get the impression they are just going to remove the given rating much as they do with Mutual Wihdrawals.

Personally I'm delighted they are trying to address some of the natty little issues that we as regular sellers have to face everyday... and feedback .... being threatened with or worrying about negative feedback is a big one for me. When someone with 20 feedback +6 negatives posts negative on my account for a $20 item they couldn't or chose not to pay for then 2 weeks later were "no longer" a registered user... well needless to say it bummed me right out! Ebay its about time... these are day to day, trying to make a living and show ones self as an honest person customers can trust, issues. As it is said... down here where the rubber meets the road! ITS GOOD!

EXCELLENT !!!!

This may put a stop to "Nasty, Bidding to Interfere,REVENGE by a Creep"
bidding

And, I read feedback....find out what the problem is and, more importantly, read the seller's response....BEFORE I bid.

I wonder exactly what they mean by "unwilling to participate in the process...". If I leave what I think is a deserved neg, and I do not want to negotiate for its removal, will that response be sufficient? or will I have to listen to the recipient's whining about how unreasonable I am?

What about removing negative feedback from people who are no longer registered members. Wouldn't this be a better idea?

These changes don't look perfect... but they're a big step in the right direction! I wonder if they'll be retroactive... in other words, will they look at negatives currently in our accounts and remove the ones that meet the guidelines expressed in change #2?

Change #1 is a pretty good change... except that it also means that not only will negatives be neutralized, we'll also get a bunch of positives neutralized as well (I constantly have bidders that think leaving me a positive feedback will absolve them from needing to follow through with the purchase!). Still #2 and #3 look like excellent ideas to me!

I think these are all moves in the right direction but maybe aren't going far enough.
#3 is great but I still say that until someone has a 10 FB rating they should not be allowed to leave neutral or negative - period. It's just to easy for them to start a new ID and move away for negative. Seller can't do that as easily - we have to suffer loss of sales until we get re-established.

"unwilling to participate in the process...". means just that. If you have a good reason for leaving a negative - why would you not be willing to participate? If someone took 4 weeks to ship - they deserve the negative - if the post office lost it - they don't! JMO

My suggestions to really improve things...

1) Remove feedbacks left by anyone NARU'd, whether temporary or not.

2) Any newbies with an under 10 rating must have their credit cards charged for any bids they make. Meaning, if they bid $100 on an auction, Ebay can force the payment on their credit card automatically, even if it is a pending transaction until the auction ends. This will get them in the habit of making payment.

3) Start reimbursing sellers all fees for deadbeat bidders. Offering second chance bids usually doesn't work. The runnerups have moved on and don't respond. Beyond that, I have questioned how easy it is for this system to be corrupted by eBay.

Well there is a license to rip off newbies if ever I saw one.

Fenix I understand what you are saying but they would still have other protections - like charge backs, reporting to ebay etc.
Does having the right to leave a negative protect them now? Not if the seller really wants to rip them off.
Maybe it could be worked out that if they still want to leave a negative after they have 10 FB's - they could. By then they will understand the system better. Haven't you seen FB like "Well packed but item still arrived broken" I have and it's just because they don't understand they are rating the seller not the transaction.
Well anyway I'm glad that ebay is trying to correct their system

Sounds like a (shudder) enhancement.
