I use a Sony Mavica FD-100 and my back-up camera is a Sony Mavica FD-85. Both are super cameras for eBay. Many of the posters here use them also. Only problem I see with them is the size...kinda heavy/bulky but very easy to use ...pop in a flop or memory stick and you ready...then pop the flop in the computer and the picks are ready to go. Great for jewelry pics...up close an personal

Thank you for your quick reply.. The Mavica is a great camera, that is what I have used for the last 4 years but it has finally died on me and to have it repaired would be $250.00 so I thought I would just get a new camera.. It would be probably cheaper to get it fixed than to purchase a new camera. But I am afraid that something else would fail. Any tips would be great!!

If it's for posting auction pictures on the web, it really doesn't take much. A computer display will only display so much, so a 5 megapixel camera for auctions pix would be like driving a Ferrari in a school zone. There are many cameras in the $125.00 range that do an excellent job. Just make sure it is good with close ups. However, if you plan on making hard copies of pictures, you will need to go with a higher resolution camera which also would cost more. I'm sure there will be a few in here later who will encourage you to fix the Mavica and stick with it.

sparkz,

I agree that having gazillions of pixels isn't necessary for eBay postings. However, I found that many things I consider essential (e.g., a custom white balance setting that is easy to do, live histograms, etc.) are only available on the higher end cameras, which also happen to have loads of pixels.

I bot a Olympus D-360L about 6 years ago and since then have bought 2 more of the same on Ebay - both for around $50 or $60. So now I have a few spares. They all work great tho

this question has been asked many many times.

The answer IS ALWAYS:

1) Sony Mavica (from the folks still running Windows 98) (just kidding)
2) Olympus

I myself have an Olympus Camedia and love it.

I bought an Olympus C-750 when I thought my Mavica was dying. The Mavica recovered, and I have never used the Olympus. I don't like their software.

stop: I have the Nikon 4500 and love it. The split body lets me swivel the lens and viewer independently; makes it easier to take pics from awkward angles. Plus I can go macro and put the lens to about 1" of an item.

My Sony Mavica 73 is still working fine but it's not on the market any longer. I'm thinking of finding one out there somewhere to keep as a backup. It takes WONDERFUL close-ups of details in books and postcards as well as jewelry.

I have a Mavica 73 too, working fine. If it ever breaks I'll get it fixed. I love it that much.

Good idea roadsmith I think I might look around for a back-up....just in case.

The best camera for taking pics for ebay is the one that you buy. Hezz, they are are all good. I have a Olympus C5000Zoom & love it. Take your pick, they arte all damn better than 5 years ago when I bought my first one.

timelessappeal - you can buy brand new Mavicas on Ebay for less than repair costs on your current on. They usually go for $150 or less, the whole package, usually less.

I used mine (still have it-Mavica 85) 'till I had to upgrade my system. It was super for auction photos of my ultra-tiny miniature woodturning close-up. I use Kodak's 10X DX7590 now, but still occasionally use my "old faithful" Mavica if I'm having problems with pics of a particular item.

Yep, most folks consider the "old" Sony Mavicas "obsolete". I found a bunch of them for sale on Ebay when I considered selling mine (for all of about 3 minutes - I couldn't let old faithful go!). The only reason I upgraded to the DX7590 is that I never bought a memory stick for my Mavica - I always used floppies. Floppies are obsolete now unless you go the external USB route. Since my Mavica was 7 years old, I was afraid I'd end up buying a USB floppy for which I had no other use but the Mavica and then end up having my camera go on the fritz, too, and be out the $$ for a new digicam and the USB drive.

Well, I ended up keeping the camera, replacing the fried motherboard in my old system for my hubby to use for his woodcarving biz/designs, autocad, etc.and I bought the USB floppy drive, too, so I can copy his pattern prints off on floppy instead of wasting a CD burn to print them out on clear stencil paper for his carvings on my new system. Guess I really didn't need to "upgrade" to the new digicam, but, at least I have a back-up in the old Mavica if I need it.

I use an Olympus D-360L which I've had for about 6 years and it works fine for what I need. My wife borrowed her parent's older Mavica (can't remember the model), thinking it would take better pics (and more convenient with the floppy), but I hate the pics. They never come out good--grainy, blurry, color is never right. Maybe I don't know how to adjust it but there doesn't seem to be all that much that you can adjust. I do have it set to high quality. I know that it is capable of taking good pics because I have seen those taken by my in-laws in the past.

Any ideas?

Wow, I would have thought those Mavica die-hards would have given up and moved on after all these years. I've always like Olympus but I think my next camera will be a Canon. The A510 is looking real good right now.

P.S. If your Mavica pictures come out noisy/grainy, you probably need more light.

'Just wanted to add, the convenience of floppy disks with the Mavica is now matched by a $20 USB card reader. Pop out the memory card, put it in the reader, and voila! Just as easy as the Mavica's floppy disk. And you're not limiting yourself to a 1/3 megapixel camera. BTW, you can't even buy a computer with a floppy drive anymore.

I have to respectfully disagree with the just as easy part. With a floppy, you can put it in any computer and use the photo right then. No special programs to download. No special equipment needed. With the memory card, you still need to download special programs, need special equipment to load it into the computer. For the computer savy person, I am sure that isn't much of a problem, but for most people my age and older, it would lead to many bottles of asprin to be consumed. For the generations even just 5 years younger than myself, it generally isn't that big a deal as those people had computers as part of the general schooling so they grew up with it as the older did not.

Case and point. I have a Mavica. I took a trip to visit family in Vegas. I took pictures and was able to load them into my brothers computer and look at them right away. No special things were needed.

He has an Olympus. When he came to visit here, he was not able to load photos to my computer as my computer did not have the special program to accept them. He had to wait until he returned home to view them.
As we all know, now in the digital area, we can take a photo and if we don't like it, we delete it and take a new one. You can see the small image in the window of the camera, but you generally don't see many of the flaws until you see the actual photo. With the Mavica, since you can use any computer, you still have a chance in many cases to get a better photo where with the others, you could be thousands of miles away before you realize you have a bad photo.

Your question is really too general. You say Internet use, but I assume you mean eBay? Are you selling house and cars, or postage stamps on eBay. Do you need macro or zoom capability? Will you be taking photos outside and away from home and hence, need rechargeable or extra batteries, or only inside where an external power source will work? Will you need flash capability? Do you want the camera to do double duty to shoot short (15 second) movies or longer videos of family vacations? Do you want a viewfinder only or the ability to immediately review your photos with an LCD display on the back? What medium do you want to write to (CD, disk, compact flash card, memory stick)? Can your computer accommodate these? What’s your budget?

Ask a vague question you might end up with a camera that many here use, but is unsuitable for your purposes. You might list your wants first.
