I have a bidder who is asking if I will ship to Mexico.

He wants to buy a fishing rod.

I replied that I had heard that delivery in Mexico is spotty and that I would rather not chance it.

He replied:
"if you use Fedex or UPS there would be no problem!

You have beautiful bamboo rods, let me take the risk.

I can buy you one rod, you send it to me via Fedex (of course I pay the shipping), and I think that would be fine!

What do you think?

So my question for all you knowledgable ones out there...Is delivery with Fedex or UPS better then the postal system?

And I guess it goes without saying that I should insist on Bidpay.

you should be safe with Bidpay. if you think of it, let me know how it works out though - everyone who's ever bought postcards from me who lived in mexico always had the cards shipped to relatives in texas. which kind of makes me wonder about the mail service there...fortunately, i haven't had to find out yet!

I have shipped to Mexico in the past and have always used the USPS as the carrier. The items seemed to have made it without a hitch, but there are stories out there so be prepared for it.

You can use UPS or Fedex, but there are a few drawbacks. Delivery tends to be slower, it will be more expensive. I guess I would figure the shipping costs for each and let the customer decide if you are concerned.

He's right - Fed-Ex or UPS to Mexico is fine (DHL is also good). It also gives you tracking on the item. I have never had a problem with shipments using those services going to Mexico.

BTW - the speed of delivery will depend on where he is. If he is anywhere near a larger city there shouldn't be any problems but it looks as those this is one of those buyers that knows what to expect from these services.

If you decide to go Fedex be sure that if he refuses to pay the high customs, that the item will NOT be returned to you. You would be charged for the return shipping. It may not be that much in your case but in a case I had the shipping was $200 for a $100 item.

I have received a couple of items sent from Mexico by Mexican postal service and have had no problems. One got here a lot faster than I expected.

I ship and mail to Mexico...UPS and USPS. I've Never had a problem, but know some people who have. Usually has to do with a poor address or an item that doesn't get picked up the first time and has to sit somewhere.

Ewora...The area I live in is about 40% hispanic, and I am acquainted with many people who send packages to family in Mexico on a regular basis. A couple of close friends figure that if 50% of the packages actually arrive, they are doing good. This is using economy surface. If you will check the USPS site, you will see that there is no option to purchase insurance on anything you ship to Mexico except for letter registered mail, or Global Express. This would be the only method I would even consider using, other than FedEx or UPS which offers insurance and tracking. Also, be sure your customs form is in both English and Spanish.
