Age is a determining factor.
Chocolate pots were popular turn of the century items, while coffee servers were popular in the 50's.
A picture is worth -----

Yes, there is a way and it has to do with where the base of the spout takes off from, near the bottom or near the top. Unfortunately, I can't remember which is which, someone will be along who knows soon.

IIRC, chocolate pots are typically smaller also, but I can't remember the spout location... sorry.

I believe a chocolate pot is more "slender" and the spout is short and near the top.

I think Twig is right.
I typed chocolate pot in eBay search, and came up with teapots, coffee pots and pitchers in addition to chocolate pots.
Looks like you can call it anything you want.

I have an antique chocolate pot - the spout is short and at the top.

Here's a photo:

and here's another:

Boy! I am glad that I don't have to take photos of my postcards! I am not much of a photographer!

I'm pretty sure the difference is that the chocolate pot's spout is high on the pot to keep the dregs from getting into people's cups.
