I'm really peeved about the way Firefox handles its updates. The options are: install now or install next time you start the computer, when it will hijack your computer for several minutes whether you want it to or not. Last update, I lost all my stored passwords and saw no improvements. Is this the trend in browsers: allowing no manual update requests? Makes me almost want to go back to Microsoft!

I agree -- many of mine were gone too. Very annoying. Go into your options tab and check advanced, updates and uncheck automatically download updates. That will turn it off.

I thought mine was unchecked, but somehow it got checked anyway. Agreed that I see no improvements.

Pixi--I haven't experienced that hijacking that you're speaking of. But it does seem strange, the way they work it.

Just happened to me a few minutes ago, but it only destroyed *some* of my stored passwords, not all.

Those bright Mozilla lads have got to do better than this.

You guys must have missed (or slept through) the Computing 101 class where we were all told to backup before upgrading any software.

Tip 203894: a weekly backup will help you recover much faster when (not if) your hard disk or computer dies. Anyone foolish enough to upgrade to Vista is doubly cautioned.

One of the wonders of XP is system restore- a utility which does back up your system to restore at certain points if it becomes corrupt. That said, a browser update should not require me to restore a previous version of my system. It should be optional, especially if the change is minor, with no improvements readily found.

Oh nonsense, agitprop. It only nuked a few passwords.

Anyway, you're the one getting it wrong. You back up your DATA, not your SOFTWARE. Software you can always reinstall from media or off the net. The day I need to backup my passwords is the day I check myself into the Alzheimer's Center.
