What do you make of the following graph from my Store Traffic Report - shows traffic coming to my listings from various search engines:

I wonder if the increased Google traffic is due to the BM search that began in Collectible Categories in mid- Feb. Are buyers frustrated with eBay search results and turning to Google to find their items? Do they always come to eBay or do they go somewhere else?

I have seen increased traffic from Google ever since I started using the Google Base Store Connector, but never in the 20% range. Here is what my graph looked like in March 2006 when I relied on eBay Google feeds:

The only way to know for sure is to ask them.

Seriously.

Get 100 of the prepaid postcards from the post office. Make up three survey questions. Have a big rubber stamp made with those questions. Stamp each card. Enclose one with each of your next 100 orders.

Oh, and indicate they can send you general comments, too.

It works.

The data that your graph shows actually supports having a seperate website. If people are searching the web instead of eBay, then it simply makes sense to have your hat in the search engine arena.

I know that ecrater items also show in google search.

Exactly wrong, but thank you for playing.

Take the March 2008 data. Total percentage from search engines is 29%. Total percentage from eBay Search is 71%.

Please don't make me have to explain that 71 is way, way more than 29.

If neglus is going to have one and only one store presence, it still makes much more sense for it to be on eBay. That's where 71 out of 100 people find her. If she wants increased visibility on Google/YSM, she can buy paid search like Bill K. does without ever going to the bother of setting up a website.

You would have to look at the landing page. Although 71% came from eBay it could have been via Google.

For example, I was trying to find some more info on an 1890 quack medicine product and searched Google. Up came eBay with a link. Clicked on it to see the listing which was for the quack medicine. Then saw that my ad for the quack medicine was also in the eBay search results.

If I clicked on my listing would it show eBay or Google? And does it matter? Hmmmm.

Since traffic reports include my jumps into my store and on my listings I take them with a grain of salt. I took my oral surgery break to end and revise over 1100 listings. My traffic report for those two weeks is junk.

What don't you understand fluffy? The numbers are clear.

March 2006, 97% of search came directly from ebay.

March 2007, that figure drop significantly to 71%.
What that means is people are going away from ebay to other venues to find their products.

What is hidden is how many of the people that are now searching via the search engines are now finding their items in venues other than eBay. That's a number that really isn't trackable, but as the ecrater thread as proof, it's happening more than fluffy will ever know or understand.

I'm not sure on the reasoning. Here is mine -

March 2008 ....

55.8% - ebay
26.2% - Google
7.7% - MSN
7.3% - Yahoo
1.1% - Google UK
2.0% - All other search engines

March 2007 ....

66.9 - ebay
20.2 - Google
6.6% - Yahoo
1.1% Yahoo UK
1.1% Google UK
1.5% All other search engines

March 2006 ....

81.4% - ebay
12.8% - Yahoo
3.5% - Google
1.9% - Alata Vista
0.3% - MSN

I began keyword advertising with Google 3rd Qtr 2007, added Yahoo 4th Qtr 2007. It is quite possible that the mess with ebay search has shifted buyers to use other search methods.

Bill,

Your on track. What fluffy don't get is when people search via other than eBay, they are going to get results that include items from other places than eBay. That will simply allow people to buy their items from the "other" places more often.
