Thought I would try a few auctions at 99 cents with my shipping at 5.00 to cover all expenses.

Well, I think this will be the last time I do this, the questions are driving me nuts.

example:
buyer writes:

Q: Hi, how much is shipping to Queens, NY? It says 5.00 for a ring? Thanks

She lives about 20 min from me. My responses to her was

yes the 5.00 is correct, it covers my listing fee, my selling fee, my paypal fee when you pay. It covers my new box I ship it in and my new bubble bag that it is wrapped in, it also covers my shipping labels that I buy. I'm not even starting this ring for the price I paid for it so this auction is a giveaway. I am not even making money after everything is deducted. You can come pick it up if you like then it will only cost you the price of your bid. Regards, tonimar1

Good grief.

And your answer was a very good one. Most of those buyers have no idea whatsoever of our costs of doing business.

Your answer is reasonable and logical, yet it will not satisfy.

Back in the beginning I used to send email responses just like yours. Not once did I get a "thanks for explaining that, I understand now". Almost without exception people took it as an invitation to argue with me.

Now I never explain. Stick to you guns and charge the $5 but ignore the emails.

That's why I stopped with the $0.99 starting price and changed it to $9.99 - made a huge difference in the types of bidders and the bidding amounts as well. Tell her it would cost her $5 in gas just to drive over to pick it up!

I am doing the start price of .99 with the shipping of $4.50 or over. I am having pretty good luck with bids. I am having better luck with sets of 5 for 4.95 and up on my videos with $5.00 shipping. They are bidding that stuff up much better. In the media catagories I don't think most people think $5.00 for shipping is high. For jewelry starting at $1.00 I don't think its high enough.
