I got a book yesterday, dated 1917. I noticed the prints in it, they are by Arthur Rackman. The book is not in real good condition, the back of the cover is almost off, and the first 32 pages have come loose from the binding, but still attached to each other. I found the same book that sold recently on eBay, a few years earlier and in good condition that sold for over $500. I also found some British sellers listing the individual prints. I wrote to one of them, and they confirmed that they were taken from the book. She has them starting at $48 each, but it doesn't look as if any have sold.

My question is, is it better to sell the book whole, or remove the almost 40 prints?

amber,

I sell a bunch on amazon. Get out your fresh razor and CUT!

Here is an example of one of mine. I was given this book at a yardsale; Prints and impressions of Charleston: Forty eight etchings
by Elizabeth O'Neill Verner

On Amazon and others it goes for $100 and up usually. Library copies a lot cheaper.

Well...I got out the razor. Listed 48 of the individual pages on eBay and the first week sold 1/2 dozen for $14-$20 each. The remaining have been in the store for $9.99. Only have 22 left...26 are gone at a GREAT PROFIT. No frame or anything. Just pack them well and people will frame them.

Norman Rockwell books good for this also. The condition your book is in ...Don't feel guilty about it, you would be surprised the number of "good" books that are burned or trashed. Old National Geographics are good for about 20-30 individual ads...the whole books are a 10¢ a dozen, ads sell for $1-5 each

Thanks, that is just what I needed to know. The illustrations are beautiful, the book itself is nothing special, and without the illustrations I think it would be worthless. I tried to look on Amazon, but I don't sell on there, so I couldn't get into the help section.

Apparently, this was a famous illustrator, I am English, but I had never heard of him. I did recognize that the illustrations were beautiful.

I googled Arther got around 1800 hits. books with his prints in them, there were 8 or 10, sell for as little as 99 cents on ABE.com Some of the books were printed by the 10's of 1000's There were of course 1st editions which may or may not have value, as well as limited editions, signed copies, all the way down to book club copies and dozens of reprints. It might be worth while to find out what category your book falls into before cutting it up. A book in the condition you described could be restored if it turns out to be a rare volume it might be worth it.

I've sold books illustrated by Arthur Rackham--very BIG NAME. I agree with the others that, if you have the time and energy, sell them separately; sometimes I do that, sometimes I sell the book AS IS, mentioning the wonderful art.

Yes Roadsmith, I think I am going to do that. I can just list a couple at a time, there are not many on eBay of the ones I have, just on the UK site.
