I'm pretty sure I know what it does -- it's a sort of ponytail retainer for the nape of the neck -- but what the heck do you call it?
This one is sterling silver and turquoise -- just gorgeous.

It looked like she had that dreaded neurological disorder that lets you browse and bid on eBay all day long but won't let you push the "Pay" button.

I don't know the correct name but it's a thingy for holding a bun in place. Asian or Mexican??
I think I have a book on vanity collectibles and I'll look it up if nobody else can ID it for you.
It's really beautiful - is it old?

Not old. Handmade by an Arizona silversmith. Here's another view:

It is lovely. My daughter wears hair thingy like that (though none as beautiful as this one) and I've never known what to call them.
If you plan on listing it, make sure you show a side view to show how deep it is. Our family has thick (bushy) hair and usually those thingies are too shallow to hold.

I also don't know what it's called but it's gorgeous...and the photo with the background color sets it off perfectly...stunning!

I've always heard them called hair sticks or hair pins - hair sticks had 1800 completed listings on Ebay, hair pins nearly 5000 a combination of both would seem to be best.
