About six weeks ago I contacted the supposed owner of a particular blog to see about placing an advertisement on that blog. (Bad advice from an acquaintance, unfortunately.) The blog owner, who bills itself as "Designer Y", promptly sent me a PayPal invoice, which I in turn promptly paid.

Subsequent emails went into a black hole. Blog entries continued to appear, indicating no real-life problem, so I filed a PayPal dispute.

It turns out the seller's PayPal account is in the name of "I. am DesignerY" and no, it's not a business or premier account so that isn't a DBA.

I don't know about you guys, but my real name is on both my PayPal accounts, personal and business, nor was I aware it was even possible to obfuscate one's identity to that extent.

Yet another symptom (albeit a very very tiny one) of the lack of trustworthiness in the unsecure eBay/PayPal marketplace.

Most of the other auctions sites we list on do require ID verification of sellers and some of buyers too. All the real payment or merchant services such as MoneyBookers or WorldPay require ID verification before you can send or receive a cent.

The real reason eBay/PayPal are so lax is that any impediment to fresh signups might impact their bottom line should eBay investors get more spooked than they already are with declining revenues, falling listing numbers, fleeing PowerSellers, etc. Now that the tide is receding (economically speaking), all sorts of frauds and mismanagement are coming to light as the corporate Ponzi and pyramid schemes all unravel...

So I complained to PayPal and got the typical no-answer no-good-answer: We can't divulge personal information blah blah blah.

I don't want to know this idiot's name so much as I want to know why PayPal doesn't require ID verification.

Of course eBay doesn't either, and we all know how safe a marketplace it is because of that.

I remember a real jerk from a few years back who decided she was going to trash my just-ending auctions by winning them (and of course leaving negative feedback as well as sticking me for the fees). She was able to create new eBay IDs at the rate of one every two minutes. I would no sooner block one before another would pop up.

When you list an item on Ebay,you can only specify Paypal payment to be sent to your registered email address.
Then I found out when I relist the item,I can change the email address.
Does anyone else have this experience?

Gentle Readers...and you too, fLuff;

I suggest that your problems with difficult bidders and payment issues arise from the categories in which you sell(e.g.jewelry, post cards, antiques, etc.).

I might suggest that you explore the wonders of selling in my particular category, used surgical instruments, where no such hooliganism occurs.

Best,
Michael
