Anyone bought one of those cute little mini notebooks? Actually I think Neglus mentioned something about that.
I'm looking at getting the Acer 8.9 inch netbook 150-1742. Comes with Windows XP. Costco has them for $299.99.
But I've got to make a decision today cause I'm off to a trade show tomorrow...

I got a laptop but wish I would have gotten the netbook. We only need a laptop/netbook for travel and netbook is SOOOOOOOOO much lighter. The ones I looked at did not have CD drive though - couldn't really add programs except through download because of limited memory - basically a machine for surfing and communicating and online work.

Hello,
The Dell Mini-9 is supposed to be a very good netbook as well, and also reasonably priced. If you need one today though, I don't know that you could go to a local store and just pick one up.
Costco has a great return policy though, so if your unhappy with the Acer (I love regular Acer notebooks) - im sure you could take it back after the tradeshow and get something different.
I think you have to decide on what part of a netbook you want to be the best (the display, available memory or hard drive space or available solid state drive/etc). They all seem to have a trade-off in one area or another so you have to pick and choose the one that addresses your biggest concerns first.
Ive been looking at netbooks lately also, and im hoping for something more like a 1280 x 800 pixels display Vs the standard right now of only 1024 x 600, which is going to make for a lot of side to side scrolling for many webpages and I think that would just drive me crazy after a while. Especially since the little mousepad tracker is so much smaller than a regular notebook. Id also shoot for one that uses the newer standard size keyboards and not some funky slightly slanted layout, where the keys are in their normal positions and you don't have to re-learn where the shift or CTRL keys are.
Neglus - you can always hook it up to your home network and install applications from another machine, or simply copy or download programs onto a flash drive and install them into a netbook that way. The lack of a CD drive is easily worked around really with the available connections and ports still on the netbook. (A USB hub connected to a USB DVD burner and USB hard drive would be perfect for at home, where you wouldn't need all your archives and the CD drive when mobile. Esp with as cheap as those units have become lately.)
Regards,
Chris

I don't have a netbook, but I do have a Dell computer and a Dell laptop. I'm very happy with both! Some Staples are starting to sell Dell computers. I prefer going through Dell directly, though.
A netbook is the way I'll go next.

From what I've read the HP netbooks are a larger format with a 10 inch screen. The one at Costco looks nice, but I'm told it comes with a whole raft of bloatware, which I don't want to have to uninstall. I'm not so sure about HP computers any more.
The Acer netbook is said to be bloat-free.
My hubby is interested in this topic too since there's an Acer product that comes installed with Linux. That's close enough to FreeBSD (Unix) for him. He's thinking an ideal netbook would dual-boot.

Fluffy,
Check out the ASUS netbooks on Amazon. Fantastic reviews. The 8.9 with XP is $299 and the 10" is $349. With an Amazon Prime Account, free shipping, and of course, no tax.

It looks like BEst Buy is selling Dell, Acer and Asus netbooks in the same price range. They also have a good return policy. They had netbooks with Linux when I checked last fall,

Hello,
Id still go with the model you like the features of the most. Bloat-ware is easily dealt with, especially if you ditch the windows and go with Linux!
Or for the brave, you can make your own 'Hackintosh' out of a Dell mini and get to run OSX on a good bit of hardware for less than $400. (at your own risk of course!)

Chris

We have an Asus netbook on order. We are Mac fanatics and I never expected to get a Windows machine but my husbands astronomy software only runs on Windows XP and the Mac emulator runs it slow and requires so much diddling to keep it going. When I saw the prices of the netbook I decided it was worth it just to run his telescope and finder software. We are backordered on the newer model which has longer battery life.
Notice if the model you want has a CD/DVD drive. We had to order a stand alone since he needs it to load programs.

I have the Acer Aspire One - With XP, 120 gigs of hard drive space, 1 gig RAM, and about a 1.7 processor (I could be a little off on that) - I really, really like it. It could never take the place of a desktop computer, working that small would drive me nuts. However, it is really easy to take the computer with me wherever I go - something I stopped doing with the laptop long ago. It's so light, about 2 pounds. It's a nice little machine and decent for the price.

I ended up not buying a netbook before I left for the conference and in a way that was a good thing. I got to see lots of attendees trying valiantly to use their fullsize laptops only to see their batteries run down. Electrical outlets were in short supply.
So I guess I'm wondering if you can get extra batteries for the netbooks or are the batteries integrated like they are in iPhones.

I think I've just about decided on the
ThinkPad SL300 13.3" with the 9 cell battery for myself. I want to be able to hook it up to my HDTV and my neighbor can get me a huge discount since she works for them.
They say it runs for 8 hours.

When I was shopping for a laptop in HK,I saw these netbooks for sale ,they run for HK $2500- $3500 ,which comes to US $320-449.
The younger folks like them for the price and use them to retrieve emails and do some lite surfing in public places .
They look like toys with colors in baby blue and pink!
