I recently purchased the Samsang Focus and just fell in love with it. The problem was that I couldn't do pass searches on ebay items(I'm now wondering if it was the phone or I just didn't do it correctly).
So I returned it and got an IPhone 4. It's OK but doesn't work in the rural area that I needed it for so I'm taking it back as well. I'm also surprised at the poor sound quality when making a call.
Does anyone have a nice phone they would recommend to use for past searches on ebay. I really like the size of the screen on the Focus much better than the iPhone as well so I'm thinking something along those lines.

Your choice of phone will most likely depend on service in your area.

I just purchased the Evo4G from Sprint - large screen, and if you have five thumbs should be easy to use.

I just did a current search on eBay and the screen was easy to use and read.

I'm not so concerned with using the phone in our (vacation) rural area anymore - as I don't think that's going to happen!!!

Bill - can you do a past search - that's what I'm interested in. I look at the Evo and really like it as well.

There are so many to pick from these days it's hard to know which way to go.

I use a Samsung Vibrant and love it. The biggest headache is researching completed items on eBay... but that isn't the phone's fault. It is eBay's poor mobile set up.

If you sign into eBay and then scroll to the bottom, look to the left and you will see eBay.com. Click on that and you will get the standard web version. It is much easier to search on that than on the mobile version. I hate the mobile version.

One of my favorite things I have with the Samsung Vibrant is that I can tether my MacBook Pro to it and use my phones internet directly on my laptop.

When we moved our business I decided to cancel Comcast ($60 a month). Instead I signed up for Comcast's Mobile2Go on our home cable. It was TERRIBLE. I canceled Mobile2Go and did some research online looking to see if I could tether my phone to my computer. I found very easy directions to do it and haven't looked back.

I am looking forward to the day where we don't get nickeled and dimed to death for internet services for each device we own. I just don't get why we have to pay for home service, for each phone we own, Mobile2Go, etc.

shagmidmod - do you have to pay for tethering?
I signed up for it with AT&T and it cost an additional $20 per month.
Do you use it for all your internet needs?

I know what you mean about the mobile version of ebay. It is bad and I think I could have "worked around it" with the Focus which is what I had to do with the Iphone. I did it another way - I googled ebay and the first thing that came up was the ebay offical site - so I clicked on that.

Not exactly. I pay to have web service ($25 per month/per phone), but the reality is that we don't use it much on our phones, so we are paying $50 a month for service and use it briefly a few times a week, mainly to check emails when we are away from home. You have to find a phone that can be tethered b/c not all phones can do that.

Basically, I found easy directions that gives me the settings for the phone and for my computer. I followed those exactly as they described and I have been tethering ever since. Even though we have unlimited web access via our phone, I try not to over use it. I don't want to draw attention to our account... just in case.

Basically, google the following:

(your phone brand/model) + tethering + (computer type)

example: samsung vibrant tethering mac

you'll find whether your phone is easy to tether and how to do it.

when we purchased our phones back in August, we asked about tethering. the sales rep said tmobile didn't support tethering, but i have found otherwise.

our 3g service is actually quite fast. i watched a 20 minute tv episode on hulu at work yesterday with few buffering hiccups.

Tethering is easy on my phone as well. I had to download the latest Itunes and then just plug everything in.
I think most carriers are getting wise to the tethering and have started charging for it.
I'm going to use it for a few days as my only connection and see what kind of usage I have.
After all I'm paying for it.

A few days ago I took the iPhone back and got the Focus again. Only to find out that the Focus doesn't tether?? That's the 1st thing I required - amazing that the AT&T store would not know this!! Why would a sales person sell you a phone with a data plan that includes a charge for tethering when the phone they sold you won't tether??
I'm trying to do the work around for tethering but I can't seem to get the connection configured correctly? What kind of connection am I looking for - it's not considered dial up is it?
I guess I'll have to take this phone back as well and I really hate that as I love it. Not to mention all the time I've spent learning the two phones.
Samsung Captivate will be my next phone - I think. It's the most like the Focus.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Why would a sales person sell you a phone with a data plan that includes a charge for tethering when the phone they sold you won't tether??

Because they're lowly drones who only get paid a commission if they sell something.

You could ask for a phone that communicates with the small furry creatures on Alpha Centauri and a cellphone slimeperson would solemnly assure you this model is perfect for that.

So I returned it and got an IPhone 4. It's OK but doesn't work in the rural area that I needed it for so I'm taking it back as well. I'm also surprised at the poor sound quality when making a call.

I had that same problem before I took the plastic off the front of the phone.
