On one account I have a 2 day handling time on my listings. I estimate I ship 80% of items the next day, 15% of items the same day, and 5% of items get shipped the 2nd handling day. All shipped via Priority Mail (2-3 days).

My feedback has constant comments about how fast items arrive. I noticed a recent dip in my DSR ratings, though no 1's or 2's.

I use Paypal to create all of my labels, so the DC # is automatically sent to the buyer and eBay's system is automatically updated with the DC # too.

My point in bringing this up is that eBay's system is quite automated. It sends out non-payment reminders automatically, updates feedback automatically, etc.

I don't understand why eBay system doesn't rate our shipping time DSR based on the first delivery attempt time noted with the DC #. If my package arrives 2-3 days before the estimated arrival date, why shouldn't I automatically get a 5.0?

Some buyers have no grip on reality. They may perceive an item took a week, when in fact it arrived 3-4 days sooner. It could have been picked up by someone in the house and it sat on a table for days before the buyer notices it.

Why not base the shipping time on the FACTS of delivery confirmation or tracking instead of buyer opinion?

Because this rating system is meant for the buyer, not Ebay or seller or shipper.

Have you ever considered having your own website or having a shop on Yahoo shopping?
The shop format is really nice and Yahoo pretty much leave you alone running the shop,no 166,000 rules !
You can specify payment methods-credit cards, paypal, money order ,check and shipping choices of USP,Fed Exp,USPS and shipping fee can be based on weight or dollar amount of the order, intl shipping? You can tag on an extra few dollars as you wish.
You can also block certain countries you want to do business with and there is support forum.
You can also issue online gift certificates and coupons and conduct email marketing.
Monthly charge is very reasonable and the final value fee is low.
Unfortunately you are pretty much on your own driving traffic to your store ! and the customer service is poor .

Here's my hunch: By the time buyers get around to leaving feedback, or whenever they're reminded to do so, they've forgotten how quickly the item arrived. Same with Amazon.

So, given that many people don't want to leave ALL 5.0 scores, they'll pick one to lower just a bit.

If, when eBay reminds buyers to leave feedback, they could say when the item left the seller's hands, that would hugely solve the problem. Maybe.

I did not know they remind buyers to leave feedback! How tacky is that? They got their stuff, if they like it and don't want to yammer on about it let them alone!!

They do this on Yahoo and AMZN as well.

UPDATE....

I just got this email from eBay:

Smart shipping and uploading tracking can earn you 5-star DSRs--no matter which carrier you choose!
Offering free shipping or fast shipping? Here's how to get automatic 5-star DSRs:

5-star DSR for shipping and handling charges: When you offer free shipping and we know the buyer chose that option, the buyer will not be able leave a score less than 5 stars for shipping cost.

5-star DSR for shipping time: Buyers will not be able to leave a score less than 5 stars for shipping time when you specify 1-day handling and upload tracking information to My eBay by the end of the next business day (Pacific Time) after the buyer's payment clears.

I also note that my FVF will drop by 1% and since I already include free shipping in my listings I won't see the increase.

I know in another thread people were talking about the extra costs to include shipping, but for me it was a matter of saving the FVF discount of 20%. I had a few people who just didn't comprehend the real costs of shipping, so I had a few low dsrs that took my discount for 2 months.

Question, Shag: I know this will sound ignorant, but how do I upload tracking info to My eBay? Is it automatic when an item is paid for and sent? Or is there another step?

If you print labels directly in Paypal or eBay, they are automatically entered for each transaction under "My Ebay" tab.

If you have to manually enter them, you can do so on your "My Ebay" page. Look for the "Action" column under your Items Sold list. Select "add tracking number" in the drop box. it is first item in the drop box list of things you can do. Note, that you won't see the "add tracking number" option if you have already shipped your package and the tracking is already entered.

I am certain you can also do this within your Selling Manager if you have a store.

Thanks very much! I'm shipping more and more through my PayPal account, saving time at the P.O. So. . . I assume if I do that, eBay will also have info on when I've shipped my package, right?

Why not just change your shipping to 1 day instead of 2? I asked ebay if I changed to 1 day and don't get the package shipped if there are any repercussions and I was told no.
So that would mean you will only have a 5% chance of getting less than 5 DSR's. Of that 5% - you know all of them won't leave a low DSR for shipping - probably very very few.
Plus if it's an item you know will take longer to pack - just adjust the time in your listing.

You're so right that some buyers have no grip on reality. I once had a buyer pay by check. It was a small amount, so as soon as I got the check - I shipped the item. Total turn around time was 2 weeks most of which was my waiting for HER check to arrive - plus there was a holiday during the time. She gave me a neutral stating it took me 2 weeks to ship. REALLY??

Ebay bought this company which offers fullfillment service like storing and shipping your merchandise, why not turn your inventory over to Ebay?
