Is one day handling time one day or the same day. Looks like ebay considers it as the same day.
It also looks like if the carrier takes too long to get it there ebay holds us responsible?

"Ship the same day the buyer pays.
As a rule of thumb, ship the item the same day your buyer pays. You'll automatically receive a 5-star shipping time detailed seller rating (DSR) as long as:

* You specified 1-day handling.
* You upload U.S. Postal Service, UPS, or FedEx supported tracking information by the end of the next business day Pacific Time after the buyer's payment clears.
* Delivery Confirmation or tracking shows confirmed delivery 4 business days from when the payment clears—or within your estimated delivery time if it's less than 4 days (for example, overnight shipping)."

Now I read this - so which is it?

5-star DSR for shipping time: Buyers will not be able to leave a score less than 5 stars for shipping time when you specify 1-day handling and upload tracking information to My eBay by the end of the next business day (Pacific Time) after the buyer's payment clears.

It means no automatic 5 star shipping DSR unless you ship Priority Mail and live next door to a PO thats open 24/7.

You dont have to ship USPS priority,if you are always by your PC,you can print shipping labels with DC via Ebay or Paypal and leave the package in your mailbox to be picked up by your postman.
Some first class small packages will arrive within 4 days.

Do all your buyers live in California?

It would only take a couple to ruin the DSR's. 4 days mail arrival is unrealistic for the entire country.

hwahwa - of course not!!

But a large number of them do. But my point is, if I ship as agreed - why should I be penalized because it take the USPS 5 or 6 days for something to arrive? What control do I have over that? Can I exclude the west coast for a shipping destination - NO. (Not that I would want to)
Ebay is just ridiculous and getting more so each day.

Question: Why do we have to upload or somehow tell eBay the tracking number? Isn't that something that eBay automatically knows?

Here's what I think is going to happen re the ship same day the buyer pays: Sellers will begin to print the shipping label at that time even if they can't get to the P.O. that SAME day. I'll be tempted to do that myself.

If a buyer pays in the afternoon, I'm not always able to acknowledge receipt, package the item, AND get it to our P.O. But if I at least, immediately, print the label, eBay would then have that information, right?

If you use Ebay or Paypal to print shipping labels, then Ebay will know what the DC number is?
But just by printing the label with DC means you are ready to ship, the shipment has yet to arrive at destination.
Periodically,Ebay and Paypal with pull the DC information from USPS website and update the DC status,so it arrives as you stated say one day or 4 days, then you get a 5 star .
Some folks dont print labels on line,so they have to enter the tracking number manually.

roadsmith - you don't want to play with the dates to much. USPS can and in some cases does keep track of that. I made one mistake on a label and got my name "PUT ON THE LIST" at the post office.
You can pre-print the label for the next day's date and just put it in your mail box for pick up.
That most likely your best best.

Roadsmith,
just because you tell Ebay the tracking number is not going to get you a 5,it has to show it has been delivered and that can only be provided by the post office.

No,you have no control over USPS ,but I wont call this a penalty on the seller.
Time is better spent finding good items to sell, taking good pictures and writing good deescription.
When they first came out with microwavable food in a container, someone remarked that we should throw the food away and eat the container as the container costs more and look more attractive than the food.
