US Postal Service backs down on ending Saturday mail delivery, saying Congress gave it no choice .
The Postal Service said in February that it planned to cut back in August to five-day-a-week deliveries for everything except packages, as a way to hold down losses.
But a statement Wednesday from agency's Board of Governors notes that Congress has passed a spending bill that continues the long-time prohibition against reducing delivery days.
As a result, the board says it believe that Congress "has left it with no choice but to delay implementation" of the five-day-a-week plan.

Without Saturday delivery, they will have a lot of mail to deliver on Monday and if Monday is a holiday,I cant imagine what Tuesday is like ?
I no longer schedule for Monday pick up,the mailman does not show up and then I get an email from USPS saying mail has been pickup?

I was surprised they backed down.
We haven't had Mail delivery on Saturdays since the 1970's.
I do remmember that we also used to have two deliveries a day...Morning Post and Afternoon post. That feels like Centuries ago.
No mail on Saturdays truly isn't much of a problem and if there is a long weekend then we just adjust.

Actually...here is a great example.
As you know we are in Canada and the majority of our Buyers are in the United States and the rest of the World with Canada being only a tiny percentage for us.
At Easter Canada Post does not work on Good Friday and we don't get mail on Saturdays or Sundays and Canada Post also gets Easter
Monday off.......so when buyers bought after 4pm on Thursday I just thanked them and told them that Canada Post would not be working until Tuesday I received nice little notes back from Buyers telling me that was fine.
On Tueaday we mailed the packages and all is well....the World continues.

This is terrible news! The post office is in financial trouble because they have an unprecedented burden to pre-fund 75 years of future retiree health benefits over a 10-year period. Congress will not stop making destructive rulings regarding the post office until they've destroyed it so that it can be privatized. So, not allowing the PO to stop Saturday deliveries is just another attempt to cause more harm.

I totally agree with you.
We follow your Politics probably more closely than our own ( it's far more interesting) and it seems that Congress has an Agenda that defies common sense.

May be they want to deliver foreclosure notice on Saturday as more homeowners will be home to sign for it.(just kidding !)
I live in a subdivision with 1000 homes,my mailman is responsible for delivering mail to 250 homes and one day she was running late as she has to deliver 55 certified letters to deadbeat homeowners who did not pay their last year maintenance fee!
