Last Saturday a man who lives on the other side of a pond in the woods, came off the Nature Trail at the end of my street and said, I've just called the fire department...some kids had a fire on the pine floor and just tried to stomp it out. When I saw the smoke I came and saw that it was spreading.

We are surrounded by woods, our neighbors on two streets back up to these same woods, there must be 20 houses or so.

Because of the angle of my house to the street plus trees and shrubs I cannot actually see the area they would use to enter the woods...if in fact they are using the nature trail. Which the city put in a year ago....

I feel that the selectman, fire and police department should make an educational call on the neighbors "No finger pointing" and make them aware of the danger. Hoping they will put the fear of God into their kids.

I personally do not want to get heavily involved because of past experiences when in retaliation for our efforts to avoid accidents the kids vandalized our cars, house and mailbox. One vehicle cost over $700 (sugar in the gas tank) We are soo secluded no neighbors can see. We have lived here 23 years.

Has anyone experienced this kind of situation or know of one and how it was handled either by the authorities or neighborhood. This is a really frightening situation.

Sorry, I have no advice for this situation. Wish I did.

I think if you call the local fire department they will be more than happy to get the word out.

I do not allow smoking in my store - and blame it on the fire department. They are quite happy to take the blame. They told me they would much rather hear that then fight a fire any day!

With school about ready to resume, they might even be able to visit the schools and do a public awareness campaign.

Good luck to you.

Spaz I meant to address the Geese...we really wanted to do that and checked with some folks who live within a couple of miles (same type of area) Alas...just as we feared..lots of noise until over time SILENCE COYOTES picked 'em off one by one...nothing but feathers...we have coyotes in our woods too...no place to protect the geese and still have them do their thing!

Get a donkey--same loud "greeting" of strangers on the property, plus they'll kick the crap out of any coyote that comes around. Lots of people use them to protect herds of sheep for this very reason--they'll actively go after coyotes and stomp on them.

Yes, that's the downside -- they're good eating.

Here's an idea -- let loose a bunch of cats in the woods. They'll keep the coyotes fed and maybe the geese will be left alone.

LOL @ Spaz

Zilvy A neighbor of ours was worried about vandalism from her ex husband. She installed a video camera at her front door and put up a sign that said something like, "This property under video surveilance." If you can't afford the equipment just buy the sign.

Maybe your neighbors will take it seriously too and work with you to keep an eye on the area.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Hi Zilvy, sorry you are having these problems. Mybid is right you know, the video surveilance idea is a good way to go. You don't actually have to have a camera but the sign is a necessity.

A lot of businesses have fake camera's set up in a visible area but up high so that the average person can not tell it is not real. They are fairly cheap to buy and in most cases they are very effective.

I hope you find a solution to this problem.

Having lived near woods I can understand your fears. Do you have any sort of neighborhood organization (neighborhood watch, neighborhood community center, etc-- even though your neighbors are few and far between? If so maybe you can get help in numbers and rather than pointing towards one neighbor you can just ask in a broader way. We recently had a big fire near us where a kid was playing around and it got out of control. Acres and acres were lost. Parents will have to pay something like $8,000 towards a fund to help repair damage (even though that will not cover all of it). Maybe when you talk to the parents (or if someone else talks to them) you can mention your citys laws regarding parental responsiblity. The fire department is your best bet-- they will know all of this stuff.

Good luck!

Zilvy, how about this idea? Where I live, I cant stand it to have kids messing around in my gardens or people walking their dogs on my lawn so they can poop. So, I planted ALOT of those spikey thorny bushes all around the perimeter. Or,better yet, plant some poison oak or ivy
