Not as often as I'd like. I never do seem to remember when to tune in to shows I enjoy. Maybe I need more post it notes around my monitor.

Yes! I'm never home on Tuseday nights, so I've been taping every episode. Unfortunately, I screwed up and didn't get last night's episode, which I believe was the last one to be aired. Care to tell me what happened????

jen and barry,

TNT is showing a Witchblade marathon this Sunday starting at 10 AM and running through all 13 episodes in order (I think it's 13) throughout the day, so here's your chance to catch up.

barry,

I could tell you no problem, but it was the Season Finale and it was pretty good -- wouldn't you rather see it for yourself on Sunday night?

BTW, it may not be just the season finale, but the series finale. TNT produced it with the intention of only doing 13 episodes, no more (as you'll see in the finale, the storyline gets wrapped up nice and tidy -- although there's plenty of room left to continue it should they want to).

I heard last week from a woman who works in the industry that as of now, TNT hasn't decided whether to bring the show back.

I hope they do. It really picked up steam these last few weeks. I wish the earlier episodes had been more compelling, but even when the plot ran thin, there was always Yancy Butler to look at.

Spaz:

Thanks for the info. I'll keep my VCR handy on Sunday.

And yes, I heard that it might be the series finale as well, which is why I was so upset that I missed it. I have read the original comic book series that it was based on, but I have no idea how true to the original the ending of the show was....

Fun series. I'll probably tape the Marathon. I did that with a show called Forever Knight (about a vampire cop) and still watch those occasionally.

Say it ain't so!!! *sob* We're on a road trip to Florida this weekened leaving well before dawn and probably not arriving until after supper time. This is definitely not fair.

I wonder when/if it'll show up on DVD? We've enjoyed watching the season-long DVDs from X-files in marathon sessions (and are eagerly anticipating the now-delayed release of Buffy stateside).

sadie,

The series finale of Forever Knight traumatized all of fantasy tv fandom. Now whenever a series is slated to end, the fans lament "I hope the writers don't pull a Forever Knight, that'll really piss me off."

Ahhh... This looks a little more official:

Hollywood Reporter:
TNT flashing 'Witchblade' in '02
Aug. 23, 2001
By Jim McConville
NEW YORK -- It's expensive, but Turner Network Television's original series "Witchblade" might be putting more fannies in front of the cable network, which explains why TNT has reupped it for a second season next year.

Turner is plunking down an estimated $1 million an episode for "Witchblade," its action-adventure series starring Yancy Butler as a female New York detective who fights the forces of darkness with an ancient, supernatural weapon.

But it may be money well spent because its TNT's successful original series has done better viewer-wise than the acquired material it had been running before.

TNT president of original programming Robert DeBitetto said Turner has ordered a 13-episode second season.

DeBitetto said "Witchblade's" renewal is related directly to its first-season ratings performance, especially in its key 25-54 demographic.

"It's really nailed our key demos," DeBitetto said. "Nearly 60% of the viewers are 25-54, and over half of our viewers are in the 18-49 demo."

Tuesday night's season finale of "Witchblade" drew an estimated 2.2 million TV households, according to Nielsen Media Research, tying its top viewer draw for its season premiere June 12.

"Witchblade" averaged a 2.3 rating and 1.9 million households during its 11-episode first season. That compares with a 1.6 rating and 1.3 million homes TNT's Tuesday 9 p.m. slot averaged before "Witchblade" on a diet of off-network movies.

Produced by Top Cow Prods. and Halstead Pictures Inc., "Witchblade" will relaunch in June.

TNT has not been as successful with its other original series attempts. TNT's first dramatic series, "Bull," which cost more than $1 million per-episode to produce, was canceled in the spring before finishing its first run. TNT's other original series, "Breaking News," never made it out of the starting gate.

I like the show, but, boy, did the finale suck! That had to be one of the dumbest endings I've ever seen.

I can understand where you might be displeased by the ending, but compared to the finales of other fantasy series I've followed, this one wasn't so bad. I also tend to consider the writing team's objectives when evaluating the success of the finale. For example, in this one they needed to close the story arc yet still leave possibilities open. They accomplished that. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.

Thanks, Barry. That's great news. Too bad we have to wait till next year, though. And it sounds like TNT is still playing it cautious despite the series' success -- such as only ordering up another half-season rather than the usual full run of 22 episodes.

To get the "Real" Witchblade, READ the Comic Book (Yep comic book). It is very good Reading (Believe it or Not).

Well, I caught the marathon on Sunday and have now seen the final episode. My only question now is what the heck are they going to do for a storyline when they start up again next year? Since most of the first season ended up not really happening [at least, not yet], will they cover the same ground but have it turn out differently? Will she meet Conchabar again and fall in love? Will she meet Jake again [obviously they won't be partners this time around]? What about Captain Dante and the White Bulls? For that matter, what about Kenneth Irons? Will he do the same things to manipulate Sarah that he did the first time around, or will he try different tactics this time?

If we've learned one thing from the time-shift-themed storylines, it's that even little changes in the timestream can have major repercussions.

Whatever they do, I hope they move away from the who-killed-my-father storyline, the White Bulls, etc. It could be that in the new storyline Sarah never becomes aware of the White Bulls, yet we the viewer will know of them and see sinister intent on Dante's part where perhaps Sarah will be blind to it.

As for Kenneth Irons, I don't know. He's a slimy critter. I imagine his need for Sarah's blood will still exist, but maybe this time around she'll become aware of his "secret" much earlier, which will make things far more difficult for him.

I got a kick out of the killing-machine Nottingham, though (the last reincarnation)..

Personally, I think they rewound time a little TOO much. Having her partner, Danny, appear as a mysterious, advice-giving ghost was a nice touch, and that will now be lost. Also, the tension between her and Jake [the "rookie" vs. the experienced cop who can't let her partner in on her secrets] will be lost as well. And what about all that Sarah has learned about the Witchblade? Will she have to relearn it all again? I think the time shift should have only extended back a few hours [days at most] instead wiping out the entire first season.

I just get the feeling that the finale was written under the assumption that there wasn't going to be a second season, so they decided to have a little fun. It'll be interesting [and hopefully worth it] to see how the writers extricate themselves from the corner into which they've painted themselves. I just hope they don't decide to simply ignore it all. I mean, we KNOW that Iron's needs her blood. We KNOW that Jake is an undercover Fed here to bust the White Bulls. Hopefully they won't just ignore those issues and turn the series into a generic "superheroine fights costumed bad guy of the week" show....
