I can not see myself paying for an operating system like MS is selling now that shuts itself down if you make any changes to your machine because you might be installing it on a second machine free.
I was told even plugging a scanner in the USB port will trigger that!
No thanks - I will probably have to learn enough to make a good Linux installation now.
I wish it were as easy as Windows but this will finally motivate me to buy a commercial version like Red Hat and try.

I went right from Win95 to WindowsME with my most recent purchase, but I think my next computer will be a mac. PC users put them down, but mac users love their macs and for the things that I do, everything is available for macs. I've used them, and they're just fine and less buggy.

The next version of Windows will also be a registration type (like paying Norton every year) and I think that sets a very bad precedent.

WindowsME isn't bad actually. The only problem I've had at all is that sometimes when I try to open a Word document from Windows Explorer, Word opens but then I get a message that the document can't be found. If I click on the doc again, it opens fine. This happens about twice a month. Don't know why, but it's not annoying enough to fix.

I didn't want to change from Windows 95 to 98, but the new PC came with 98, so I had to.

I may buy a Mac as a second PC, but I fear that the minority position of Macs does cause problems for interoperability with other machines, software, documents, graphics, etc.. And I don't want to continually ask "will it work on a Mac?" I also found a lot of freeware that is out there is more and more not available for Macs.

I have ME, I liked 98 better, some of my favorite older programs won't work with ME.

There is nothing wrong with a Mac, except that everything available for it is proprietary.

The new Windows-XP is indeed going to become a hassle. However, it is not as bad as you are describing. Here: read this quick article to explain the facts from a reviewer who isn't too pleased with the idea either Windows Watcher, Computer Bits Magazine.

Reading up on the facts of activation will calm some of your fears.

We have no plans on upgrading since we're very happy with Win98se. We actually were running Win95b until just a couple of months ago. We added a new hard drive, and loaded Win98se then so we would have full USB support.

But those who may choose to upgrade will want to read the facts:

I only got rid of Windows 3.11 because I bought a camera that needed 95 or above. I have a Mavica now, and with the floppy drive, that isn't an issue now.

A cable modem is an issue now, and I'm not sure that I could do Road Runner on 3.11.

But if I could, for 3 nickles I'd reformat, and go back to 3.11. I've seen 650 mhz machines running 3.11, and they fly, and are stable as a rock. I never did see a reason to upgrade software "just because".

Meya - They make it sound innocent but a fellow from Ziff-Davis noted that the first time it happened to him he pulled out his laptop to do his column on an airplane and it shut him out of using it at 30,000 feet half way across the continent. Hardly a handy time to contact Microsoft and get permission to use your software again.
And why had it shut down? - Because he had undocked the laptop from his desk station.
Another user was locked out because he connected a scanner to the USB.
What was particularly offensive was that when he did call Microsofthe described the person who he had to get to release his software as "grilling him" for the details of why it shut down and what changes were made.
I can not even use a telephone due to bad hearing so wouldn't I have a great time?
I use the computer as my PRIMARY means of communication and they want to have the right to withhold the use of it that I have paid for anytime they SUSPECT I might be cheating them? NO. They don't even offer a fax or other way to contact them they are so unaware of disability issues. In fact those pages on the issue contain no way to contact them - they don't want to hear from you.

I'd be more inclined to feel sorry for Microsoft and their piracy problems if Windows was only $20 each. At $300 plus for Windows 2000 which is licenced only one copy on one machine, I feel no pity for their greed. Because they are the monopoly that they are, they have absolutely no incentive to ask a fair price. And for that, I feel no pity for their plight.

december3,

I'm not sure which programs don't work for you on ME. I have an older copy of Office Suite that won't work on ME, but I've been told that if you go to the Microsoft site, there's a patch so that it will be operable. I haven't done it yet, so I don't know if it will work, but you might want to check it out and see if they have the patches for what you're looking for.

Personally, I miss Windows 3.1! Every version since then take for-bloody-ever to start up, close down, and has problems in between.

[b]MILLENIUM EDITION SUCKS!!!![/b[

I am awaiting the release of XP before I upgrade to a sensible system.

I'm satisfied with Win98se. I have no plans on spending the money for an upgrade, unless I purchase a new computer. I don't see the point in upgrading every time a new OS is realeased.

My experience with new operating systems has generally been negative. I usually wait until they issue the first service pack or upgrade to the most recently released OS before I buy it. No sense in paying to be a beta tester...

Heck, I'm still running Windows 95 and have no plans to change. I bought this computer right when Windows 98 was coming out - it came with the upgrade - but I've never put it on and don't want to because it works and why mess with it.

You are so wise. I had Windows 95 and it worked fine. But I upgraded to 98 and then to ME and now my computer is ready for the dump. With each upgrade my computer suffered a downgrade.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. LoL

Now, I need a new computer but I don't want Windows ME.
