Just wondering if anyone did anything particularly fun or different or even exciting this summer?

As for me... I took a road trip to Colorado. (From Texas) This was my first visit to Colorado. I really enjoyed the mountains but I'd have to say the fabulous weather was the highlight of the trip.

Other than that, I just worked myself into oblivion, finally made eBay Powerseller (although I've yet to see if there are any true dividends to that) and at long last put in a nice air conditioned "everyone else keep out" workshop.

I'd say my summer was medium on the fun scale... how about you?

Well, I have been enjoying the mule I bought just before summer began. Her name is Sweet Fanny Adams. I've been going on trail rides, meeting other mule owners, etc. In fact, a bunch of us got together & formed a new organization, The Southern California Mule & Donkey Assn., and I have been made the editor of the newsletter (third issue goes out Monday).

Other than that, my job consumes my entire summer & I can't take any vacation time between June & August. I'm a children's librarian & the Summer Reading Club is a huge undertaking--this year we offered special programs for all ages every day Monday through Friday. Now I am exhausted!

We are just pretty much tied down now with my mother in law in the house with Alzhiemer's.
Youreally don't know how much those little day trips and 3 day vacations mean until you are tied down to caring for someone. By this time next year she will be in a nursing home and we will be free. My wife is already talking about going places.
There is a lot of pent up demand.

The only trip I've had this summer is in my bathtub when I let Calgon take me away.

We had 2 long weekends planned, both of which were cancelled for different reasons. One to NC and the other was antiquing in another part of PA.

August has been hectic. We have had overnight company 3 out of the 4 weekends and the 4th weekend we had my husband's 40th reunion on Saturday and another function on Sunday. I'm waiting for my company now. I'm pooped!!!

I've even been cooking!!! Just finished making Waldorf Salad for tonight's dinner.

I like the company, but I just wish they would space it out a little better. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on my mood) we are a pit stop on their trips.

We have a planned trip to NC in September. We're keeping our fingers crossed. (biggrin)

Thanks Femme

Gravid I had been wondering how it was going. Alzheimer patients are among the most difficult to care for, I believe. Doesn't your state have any kind of in-home nurse relief program? I have no idea of what it's called but when an uncle of mine had Alzheimers the family was able to bring in occasional assistance through a state program. He's been gone for years now - so, I'm not sure if it's still available.

We are still able to send her to adult day care everyday on a bus, but one of us has to be here to get her on the bus as she does not know what the door buzzer is (it scares her) and she can not read a clock anymore.
We have seen a big decline in the last month and see the day coming soon she will be in a nursing home.
She does not remember what she has done an hour ago and she has started getting up and staying up in the middle of the night. We took her to a buffet last week and she insisted she could go to the bathroom alone and went straight in the kitchen. She has this thing at home about picking up any little piece of lint or trah she sees and we had a hard time keeping her off the floor at the buffet. She would have spent the time picking their floor instead of eating.
She can't get the ice cubes out of a tray and busts the pull tabs off cans without getting them open. She has busted all the little corn skewers off my wife had. Just snaps the plastic off because she does not know which way to push or turn anything anymore.

I'm glad you've got the adult day care to help out Gravid. The thing I remember the most about my uncle was that he spent hours and hours every day on a disconnected phone making bets and deals. He was a bar owner and apparently a bookie before the illness took over.

I'm fortunate enough to never have had experience with Alzheimers in a family member. My Grandmother had Brain Cancer that surfaced similarly to the beginnings of "OldTimer's" (as we call it here in Florida) yet as it progressed, she wasn't "dangerous" to herself. None of the going out for a walk at 4 am stuff. I can't even imagine having to monitor that.
Gravid (((big hugs as you care for her))). You must be very special people.

Summer?
hmmm...
Hot and rainy.
Lotsa shoppin.
Four day cruise to the Bahamas (lost lotsa shiny dollars going for the MegaCash jackpot)

Congratulations, Zoomin!

I had the pleasure of having my children at work with me most of this summer. It was wonderful - and I didn't get a doggone thing done

On the few days they were with their grandparents, I missed them horribly. So, all in all this was one wonderful summer. I got to really know two fabulous little people. Each year with little ones means so many changes, I will forever cherish the good times we had.

zoommmm -Thanks for kind words
Mybiddness - Good for you that your volume is up. i am way down in volume and got kicked off power seller but it is not as bad as it sounds - I was selling lots for a thin margin - now I sell little but usually at 100% mark up.That was real interesting about your Uncle because my MIL comes out of her room and informs us she just had a nice visit with a bunch of people - some of whom are dead. She also has people sending her messages through the TV set.
Nettak - I hit 1000 this summer also - but it took me about 10,000 transactions to get 1.000 feedbacks.
Wouldn't it be nice to spend summer here then go spend another in Australia?
My Dad used to spend winters in Florida which is still winter here but very moderate.

Oh I do love a princess cut.
I have a bud who cuts his own stones and that is hard to beat even if you can do exotic cuts. Hope the groom is cut out as neat as the stone!!!

On vacations - Since retiring we don't feel that need to 'get-away' like we did before. It's vacation time all the time.

mybiddness - Congratulation!!! Lots of hard work...

bunnicula - Are you going to share a picture of Sweet Fanny Adams? Glad to hear you're enjoying her so much.

gravid - Sending lots of patience and strength your way. A friend of mine has a mother with Alzhiemer's and I know how hard it is for the family caring for them. Hang in there.

Zoomin - Congratulations to you too. How wonderful. any advice on marrying a 40 yo bachelor? Sure.....continue loving him the way he is, don't try to change him.

Zoomin I'd love to see your ring! As for advice... I dunno. I met my hubby when we were only 16 - so, he was still young enough to train.

Hi Nettak In a way I wish my summer was just beginning (again) - It seemed to fly by too fast. I'd like to see Bunni's mule too. I have to admit I've never once even considered owning a mule. I don't want anything that might be more stubborn than I am.

Hi LindaK Vacation time all the time... dayum, that must be nice. My trip to Colorado was the first vacation I've taken in forever. I'm afraid I'm a terrible combination of homebody and workaholic... such an exciting life I live!

Actually, she's not stubborn at all. Mules have that rep because, unlike horses, they will not allow humans to work them to death or make them do something they *know* is dangerous. Here is a picture of Sweet Fanny Adams:

Bunnicula I have to admit I always thought Mules were dumb-stubborn - not smart-stubborn. But, what do I know? I also thought that all mules were brown. As a matter of fact, she's also bigger than I had imagined... We ought to have a thread about animal myths... bet there's a lot more I only think I know. That could be a long thread.
