Hi everyone - I've come down with something and I can't tell if it's a cold or an allergy. (I didn't think I had any allergies but everyone is telling me that that's what it is because the ragweed is so bad right now(??)).

barbarake, its probably an allergy. I never had them before either, but now that I am older, I guess it decided I was due. Only thing you can do is take allergy over-the-counter meds. Me, I just sneeze all damn day and the next, I feel pretty good. Sorry I cant be of much help. But you arent alone.

It can be really hard to tell. Both you can be feverish - eyes itch - throut can get sore.
Alergies you don't usually get joint ache. And a cold will almost always get better in 3 days 5 max. but a bad allergy season can linger for weeks.
With allergies your mucus is usually clear or white and with an infection usually tellowish. But some people have a problem getting sinus infections when their allergies kick in.

'Morning, all...
Hate to bring bad news, but it is very possible you have the Flu immediately followed by a summer cold.
I started 1-1/2 week ago with what I though was allergy: sore throat, scratchy eye...By following morning, could not breathe right...then felt very, VERY ill and dizzy, and went to bed...by Wednesday, runny nose, horrible cough (still going on), fever, watery eyes...From Friday to Monday, laryngitis...Finally feeling ok now, but for the cough...
Take cold cough syrup, aspirin (bufferin), use Vicks Vepo Rub....Be prepared

I've never had allergies before either unless I've just never come into contact with the stuff I'm allergic to before. Now my symptoms are so strange that I'm becoming wishy-washy as to whether it is an allergy or a cold. With a cold I always get a sore throat first and then symptoms progress in a certain order and then subside in a certain order but I'm usually mostly better within a week. This time was different. I had some sneezing spells (I normally hardly ever sneeze even with a cold) and have been dealing with itchy watery eyes. The other day I was sitting at the computer with cold-like symptoms and within a matter of seconds I started a sneezing spell for no reason and itchy, tickly nose and sinuses blocked up. I was gonna go lay down but within 15-20 minutes I was back to just the cold-like symptoms again. I've also been feeling kinda sluggish like you normally get along with aches when you get the flu but there are no aches, just a feeling of no energy and just crossing the room can make me feel out of breath. Simple things seem to just take a lot out of me. I'm not one to slow down just over a small amount of symptoms and so I kept trying to go full steam ahead this week and finally I couldn't do it any longer. I had to take a nap yesterday and sleep in late today. Allergy meds helped at first but then I was feeling dehydrated all the time. I also wasn't getting enough sleep this week cuz I'd wake up several times in the night with a catch in my throat and coughing and also my eyes watering so bad that the tears were just streaming out like a water faucet. It would take an hour or more each time just to get back to sleep. I had some kind of a bad reaction this summer to something also. Have eczema on my face and neck and had a minor flare-up this summer and after being outdoors one Saturday in July, my skin got so bad that it felt and looked like someone dumped acid on my skin and I had a flare-up on a patch of skin that never got it before. I think the air around here must be full of all kinds of stuff this year. I've been here in CT for 10 years and these strange symptoms is a first (and hopefully a last).
