Our house was scheduled to go on the market yesterday. We debated whether to do this now in light of the events. We listed it today amid much uncertainty. What effect will current events have on the sale of our property?

Also, we need destination ideas.
We don't "need" to move. We are just trying to improve our climate, etc. and come out financially ahead. I love (adore-rip my heart out) my house and land but...It would certianly be nice to make a move and be debt and mosquito free and start a new adventure.

T

New York and Washington have already been ruled out.
Don't laugh....Idaho is looking pretty good.

Washington states not bad, and Seattle doesn't make up for all of WA state

There are some nice small towns in western Wa, and if you like hot in summer, cold, snow in winter, there is Eastern Wa

but alas, Western Wa housing prices are a little steep...

Idaho is nice, but too far from the ocean for me

Terri,

I don't think this week's events will have an effect on real estate values. Plus the housing market has remained strong despite a soft economy, so now seems like as good a time to move as any.

North Carolina is nice, still hot in the summer but not a bad climate overall. Washington is too cool for some (like my husband), though I like it a lot. Like NearTheSea said, Eastern Washington has distinct seasons and the housing prices there are pretty reasonable, too, at least in comparison to Western Washington. My parents are quite happy in Wyoming and the summers there are great, but the winter is pretty nasty. Parts of Idaho are nice.

Beth

I almost forgot - Ohio and Pennsylvania are nice, too!

Northern Arizona--Prescott, Flagstaff, very nice and still rural but lovely. (I don't live there; we're in Utah.)

Rainybear, yes housing is much more inexpensive in Eastern Wa. Forgot to say that, and a lot like parts of Idaho too lol.
I, too like the cool weather on this side, and the water

I liked most of New Mexico when I was there, not sure what the housing costs are like though.

There is talk that the Fed will lower rates a full half point next meeting instead of 1/4 point due to the recent disaster.

Lower rates won't hurt.

New Mexico is too near a nuclear target. A week ago I wouldn't have cared. I am going to look the other suggestions up.

Idaho is cold but little snow in some parts.

Austin is gorgeous, all year round. Not that I'm biased, of course! But with the technology companies laying off so many people, it is definitely a buyer's market right now-especially on the >300T homes.

I have traveled all over and if I could go anywhere I wanted I would go out on the North Olympic peninsula west of Seattle. It has all the other advantages of Washington without the constant overcast and traffic. You have the Mountains - close enough to Seattle to go to the big city - the pacific side is a beautiful coast - close to Canada - a huge national park to explore with a rain forest.
If you like to garden you have to learn new things - there is very little rain fall in sone areas near the Sound.

North Carolina, T. Not much in the way of mosquitos, good prices on connsumables and land. (We're interested in a 4/3 home with full basement on 2 acres at $75K right now...)

You know Jen, we loved it up there. I thought of your BEAUTIFUL valley when we discussed this. Mentioned it even. If I had my choice I would probably be your neighbor. Unfortunately on the JSS (the Jim Survivability Scale) it only rated about a 5. We are in a 5 zone now and consider that fair so I haven't completely forgotten it yet. Jim is holding out for a 6-7.

Now this place scored an 8+.

This ranch home built in 1996 has 4 bedroom(s), 3 full bath(s) and is approximately 3000 sq. ft.
Trouble is:
Population
1,073 (1990)
1,072 (1998)
And if I am not mistaken there isn't much else for 200 miles either.

This is better as community goes and rates a 6-7 on the JSS.

This ranch home built in 1948 has 4 bedroom(s), 1 full bath(s), 1 half bath(s) and is approximately 2562 sq. ft. This home has a 2 car garage. The property is located on 18.5 acre(s).

Both are Idaho.

What a fantastic opportunity to be able to choose where you really want to live! My neighborhood has always been dictated by family and job considerations. But if I could make a choice, I believe that I would want waterfront property on the East coast.

Although you may miss having many acres of land, and your house, I understand your need for a better climate!

Good Luck!

Helen

IMHO it would be best to sell now and as quick as you can. From my experience in the NorthEast, the last time we had "war" [93]and another time reccesionary woes the market tanked. THOUGH....we have had an unprecedented run-up in price over the past 2-3 years. Price it right....sell it quick.
Do not hesitate.

good luck

COLORADO is mesquito FREE. Or so that is what they say. There are so but not like say Kansas City.

You can get a view like you currently have in many many many places here.

Think about it ....you just might like it!

Terri,

In my last post, I recommended the east coast.

I've changed my mind.

Australia is the place to be.

No need to change coasts, Helen - just change oceans. The east coast of Australia offers some stunning waterfront views

Come on down - AW needs some more Aussie posters!

Hi Snowy

Yup - it's a pic of Palm Cove near Cairns in North Queensland. About 700miles (a couple of days driving) north of me. Queensland is renowned for it's stunning beaches - I've got a couple within about 40minutes of me.

And the locals are friendly

Michelle, YES I want to live there. It was my understanding that you all did not allow Americans to become citizens. Is that correct?

(I can't afford to move that far anyway.)

Incorrect, Terri

As long as you meet the residency requirements (permanent resident for 2yrs and intent to continue living in Australia, are of good character , have basic knowledge of Australia, can speak basic English and are willing to pay the fee ($AU120=$US60), even Americans can apply!! The rules were even relaxed in the last couple of years to allow applicants to hold dual citizenship.

Apply Here!

Oh - and the nearest U.S. military installation is about 1,500 miles west

Movers? - They have everything for sale there that you get here. Why move it across the Pacific? Put a few Diplomas and photos in a box - a toothbrush in your shirt pocket and head for the airport.
I am not sure if they would accept my english however I would have two years to work on it.

I do figure eventually the Chinese are going to have ambitions on Australia - but that will be for the next generation to worry about.

Thanks for the info - I have to find out what your situation is on health care and how far my social security check will stretch.
