This piece talks about some points that have been bothering me. The terrorists engaged in an elaborate and lengthy plan which went undetected, yet the clues left behind make them look like the 18 stooges:

Since their religion teaches that they will go straight to 'Heaven' for these acts, maybe the ones who died wanted it known who they were so that they could be remembered by their countrymen as martyrs (sp?)?

It makes national security look like the keystone cops more than it makes the terrorists look like the 18 stooges.

JMHO

Part of it is most likely because of the martyr syndrome. But, I think every move should be viewed with suspicion. I also certainly hope that the FBI are going to remember their errors in 1993 when they let this type of thing lead them away from Yousef.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

I am still trying to understand the taliban and how they tick.

They seem to have a pathological focus on becoming a martyr to the exclusion of caring what their countrymen think or believe.

On the other hand, bin Laden has no intention to practice self-immolation.

And I think that bungling the operation is not a part of his agenda. The clues were planted.

The Taliban think no differently than any other zealot. They are right, everyone else is wrong. WE are right, THEY are wrong.

This might give some insight.

Why does anyone think that any group that can take religion and pervert it as the basis for wide scale murder might not be the brightest bulbs in the world?

They are just like abortion clinic snipers. They are incredibly ignorant, and what little brainpower they have is consumed by the mantra they've been programmed with.

You don't have to be smart to be a terrorist in the USA. One of these animals (it's been reported) was here on an illegal visa that if they would have looked up his name (he was using his correct name!) when he showed up in this country 3 yrs ago, he would have been shown to be sought by Israel for terror bombings.

Evil may be stupid, but Good is amazingly more stupid.

Sure they were careful until they got in the car to go get on that plane. They knew they were not coming back and it did not matter what they left behind.

What if some passerby glanced into the car(s) before takeoff, saw any part of what was found and recognised the possible significance and gave warning? Would you say that that happenstance might be anticipated in a carefully crafted plan?

Myself - I would keep my cover tight right to the end because I am a belt and braces sort of guy. If something as simple as a flat tire threw their scheduale off they could have missed thier flight and had to re-group and try another time. I always assume the worst and when it happens I am prepared. That is why if you look in my trunk you will find everything from a radiation monitor to a hand ax.

in my trunk is;

a complete change of clothes including shoes. I might have to change a tire or walk out in the rain or the dog might rolf on me. I have a sealed container of candy, sealed pouch of jerky, 2 peel-top cans of food, canned juice (ikk!) a 'complete medi-kit' (but they always have everything EXCEPT what you are looking for!) some money (about $10, broken down) an old blanket, an enormous knife which can slice an apple, dress a deer or cut rope. A 150' hank of trucker's rope, new. Several unused lawn size trash bags. A folding shovel. Some scraps of 1X2" pine for kindling. An old rubber front-door mat. Full bottle of rubbing alcohol, good for cleaning self or knife, or starting fire. 10/40 motor oil, tranny fluid, brake fluid. The obligitory flashlight, metal case. More stuff but memory fails. About once a year I throw out the juice, food and candy and buy new.

just yer typical Mom, only paranoid

(never needed to/had to dress a deer, but dressed uncounted multitudes of rabbits and chickens with that knife. I'm quite the hunter when there is an appropriate amount of chicken-wire involved.)
