We've seen some suggestions already in the eBay forum and I think the moderators would like to see that forum go back to eBay discussions, so I'm posting this here instead.
Besides the obvious:
1. Donating money
2. Giving blood
3. There have been calls on the news for donations of socks, T-Shirts, and the like for the rescue workers
I was at my county blood bank today giving blood and while I sat there waiting my turn, (and the wait was rather short as I understand that people waited 5 hrs. on Tuesday with nary a complaint), a woman walked in and apologized for not being able to donate blood because she didn't meet the weight requirement. But she was carrying 2 plates of homemade chocolate chip cookies for the workers and the donors! What a great thought! Shortly after, another woman walked in and apologized for not being able to donate (she'd been turned away the previous day for medical reasons I think), but she'd come back to see if there was anything she could do. They promptly put her to work passing out the juice and cookies to those who had just finished donating and also keeping the little children entertained and out of trouble with juice, cookies, crayons, and coloring books. I'd also heard that someone had brought in homemade soup the previous day.
So if you can't afford to give money, and you can't give blood, maybe there is some way of giving of your time and labor somewhere or somehow.

Different "click to earn" programs are allowing you to give points for donations.
Mypoints.com is allowing donations of as few as 200 points (about $1.85) You get nearly that many for signing up. My referral is jenndiggy and I'll donate any referral points I earn to the Red Cross.
Also, Memolink and milesource are allowing donations of points, but you have to have been a member of milesource before Tuesday, and memolink requires 1200 points for a $5 donation.
I've already donated some of my points, and I hope some will join mypoints to help the red cross.

www.thehungersite.com is also donating for each click. They are providing food for those affected and the people involved in rescue operations. Please try to make a click at their site daily, and help in a small way, as each bit helps!

I cannot donate blood (medical issues) but I can watch the children of folks who are able to donate, to make it easier for them to go down. I'll be doing this next week several times.
We have friends in NYC who are watching the children of several rescue workers as needed; other friends are making food for folks who have family still missing.
My daughters have given me things to auction for them so that they'll be able to donate some $ to the recovery efforts.
Friends in states nearby have gone to NYC to help anyway they can and will stay until they're not needed any longer.
