*quickly putting on flame-retardant fur again*

...Or is there any other news besides what happened on Tuesday?

I don't mean to sound cold-hearted or uncaring but there are other things happening in the world that are important, too. Yet, to watch the news, you'd think the rest of the world ceased to exist on Tuesday.

While I'm interested in the ongoing rescue efforts, investigations, and possible reprisals, perhaps the newsie types could branch out a tad and cover other newsworthy events like, oh, say, the barge that hit the bridge in Southern Texas last night and sent cars into the water?

I'm feeling a tad peckish today. I want NEWS, not yet another talking head rehashing what a half dozen other talking heads have said.

We had a mini-hurricane come through here yesterday and last night. (Central Florida).

Took down trees here and there, knocked power out in the Tampa Bay area for the best part of a day. LOTS of rain.

I heard about that(from a friend, not the news). She said they got 7" of rain. Wow. Pair 'em up, Noah.

Some how we didn't lose our power (I don't know how, I saw quite a few trees down on the way to the post office this morning.)

The wind was really whistling threw here last night.

In Australia they shut down one of the only two airlines they have. It had been sold to New Zealand and then quickly shut down throwing thousands out of work in a company that was been around almost as long as commercial aviation. I asked nettak in the WSUTL thread to give us some URLs about it.

Thanks Microbes,
I have a close relative in the Tampa area, and I thought from reading posts yesterday morning it was going to be just a light tropical storm.

I have gone back to my usual news at NPR and BBC. I get very tired of ABC & CBS news, even their world news on a normal night is what the US is doing out in the world, for the world or what the world is doing to us.
They have tiny snippets of what is happening in other areas. JMHO.

I saw FOX today for a minute because my husband had it on...how pathetic. Many of the reporters on that network look like they are trying out for acting jobs!

If any of you haven't started watching the BBC, you might want to try it. Here in the DC area it is on Howard University Ch 32. NPR (American Univ) here is now having global news in the daytime instead of stuck in a late night slot. Maybe yours will too.

Agreed. With the rollover of CNN to sensationalism, BBC news is about all there is on that thing. I just wish the announcers were topless.

I started watching BBC a few nights ago. They are telling it like it is, without the dramatics, so it is very understandable to me and keeps me up to date better than the "local" news channels. But Im not interested in the topless thing. Unless some of the guys wanna go bottomless, then thats ok.

Today on our regional news from Houston, Continental Airlines held a news conference in Houston and announced they had lost so much money being down from Tuesday they are broke and will be laying off 1000s.

They are going to ask the Federal government to step in and help keep them open for at least 1-3 months. The spokesperson for the airline said they doubt they would be the only airline to do so. They pointed out that air travel has become a very important part of commerce. If the airlines go broke, then commerce as a whole will suffer.

Well, I hate to have to report that this morning, I heard that Mr. Bush is back to pushing for abolishing the "Capital Gain Tax"...Even in this time of great sorrow, all he sees is to continue the "pay-back" to his buddies. How does he propose to pay for this "long=term war" of which he speaks????
Social Security, of course!....

I am truly, really, trying to find something positive to say about him, but it is so difficult!

He announced that we would "flush out the terrorists out the their hole because we will not allow them to do those [sounded remarkebly like]ax or terror for how long it takes. Say what????

Also, last night late, I watched him in New York, where he said that "I stand here with my knees bended....
Someone, please, write and proof-read his speeches! Don't let him ad-lib.....
And please, Mr. Bush, drop the "Make No Mistake about it" which you and many past Presidents seem to have been brain-washed to believing that this phrase says it all...NOT!

Fortunately, he has some good people in his cabinet, or America would be in even deeper doodoo right now...

That's it. That is my way of expressing my sorrow. I went to my Synagogue, I lit my candles, but I will not pretend I like Bush any more today than I did yesterday; that would be hypocrotical. Thank you for allowing me to speak.

I have a close relative in the Tampa area, and I thought from reading posts yesterday morning it was going to be just a light tropical storm.

By the time it came ashore, it was a "borderline" hurricane. Nothing like a Catagory 3 or 4, not life threatening unless you got hit by a "spin off" tornado or stood right beside a big tree that came down. But it did blow our trash cans around

Here's a story about the bridge accident: http://news.mysanantonio.com/story.cfm?xla=mysa&xlb=2&xlc=296648&xld=2

None of the major papers like USA Today had any mention of this story.
