It is interesting that a number of allies are telling the US that it is not appropriate to call this a war and that to one degree or another they are not going to take part.
What will they do if several of the people in Congress should have their way and actually declare war? Their very action in abstaining may push congress into doing so. Then what will they say?

I wonder. Could they say that war cannot be declared against an organization...but, only a nation?

edited to say: I expect, if some countries want an out...that's what they'll use.

I would expect that most will probably come up with another excuse. Many who have been supportive (in words) won't be there for us when the 'war/conflict' starts. Terrorism affects the whole world, but since these recent acts didn't happen to them I doubt we will have much military support.

My belief is we need to go into this (whatever is going to happen) thinking we will be fighting alone. If it turns out we aren't alone....all the better.

Someone educate me (a daunting task.) Unless it is a declared war aren't the insurance companies liable? Could we have 5,000 wrongful death lawsuits against airports, airlines, building owners, etc?

We are not alone. The U.S. and Great Britain will stand together.

Personally, I believe we should bring Russia into NATO. They would be more reliable than many of the NATO members who bail out when its time for REAL support.

uaru - Yep. I've seen/heard several independent (sorta) accounts indicating that at least one of the involved airlines had their lobbyists hard at work on the hill Wednesday morning pushing for legislation to bail them out of this aspect of things.

On the matter of insurance: I read the list of tenants in the WTC that someone here posted a link to. I was amazed at how many insurance companies were based there.

If the airlines can't stay "solvent" because they lost a few days air time and the government needed to bail them out, what about all those insurance companies that's physical assets and employees were impacted by all of this? Who insures the insurance companies?

Yes our country at least can declare war on an individual or an orginization.

I think, not sure it was 1815 that the U.S declared war on the pirates on the Barbary Coast, which dragged on, but it was a war, and declared such

If (and this is a big IF) the airlines had taken more care in paying attention to whom got on their planes, and IF those same airlines made it extremely difficult to get inside the cockpit, and IF the people working for those same airlines took the necessary precautions to make sure those who did pass the gates and xray machines as well as had competant crew to handle such emergencies(personally, I think stewardesses are just waitresses in the air), would those planes have slam dunked into those towers? Not having any family or friends (that I know of) in those towers or in those 4 planes), I dont know what I would do concerning suing them. But IF all these things were taken into consideration and someone has to find a fault, where would that fault lay? At the airlines? At the border?

"who insures aninsurance company?"
answer - companies who deal in re-insurance - they cover insurance companies against major loss --
interesting fact discussed on CNN last night --
Bin-Laden was adding to his wealth via selling short i "re-insurance companies' stock and bonds"!
Hmm -- making more money by this if we declare war??? Slick isn't he? Seems we need more savy folks on a PC to catch in his bank books!

First I have already heard on the news Friday that the three major Effected Insurances companies in this matter Have already stated they will pay off all claims they will not instate any act of war clauses.

The goverment has stated that they will more then likelly be bailing out Airlines and insurance companies just starters.
