I have long hair that I want to style differently - I wear a perpetual ponytail. Any good web sites out there that show how to style hair? Some that I have found you either have to have a friend help or be a contortionist.

You could try the ones that require you to be a contortionist.

I understand contortionist can make very good money as a side line in the off season

dman: true, but right now all of my pain is reserved for my eBay auctions.

psmith: How on earth do you sleep with a hairdo like that? I do however like the lightening stipes down the side.

Hi Murphy ~

I have very long hair and the way I wear it the most is I pull it up on the sides with a butterfly clip on top. This way, my hair is out of my face but it's still long in the back.

When I'm just hanging out around the house it goes up in a scrunchy though! (LOVE those things!)

Every once in a while I get tempted to chop it all off real short... but then I remember how I always regret it and keep it long

After a lifetime of very short hair ( cut it off at age 7 when mom wasn't looking ), I decided to try long hair. For 3+ years I didn't cut it and it grew quite long (halfway down back). At first, the novelty of having long hair was fun. I tried different things with it.

But then...I gradually became aware of what a pain in the butt long hair is. It takes a whole lot longer to dry. You have to *do things* to it or it hangs in your face and gets in the way. It is heavy. It is hot. It is...annoying.

So I cut it all off again. What a relief!

Heck, go for broke and shave your head. You'd be amazed how much time you save when you don't have to futz with your hair.

It's easy to get in the ponytail rut w/long hair. I've had long hair most of my life.

French twists are easy and can look casual if you keep them low and pull a few strands of hair out so you don't look like a banker - they have lots of doodads at pharmacies, etc. to help you do these.

Braids are good - small ones just as decoration, but if you do them right, you can use them to keep the hair from falling in your face.

I like it best just hanging shiny and clean.

Don't know any websites.

How do you do a french twist? I've learned from one website that I'm going to need more hairspray, gel etc to keep this heavy hair anywhere near up - and for buns I'll need some good secure bobby pinds. I've seen those "hair sticks" on eBay - do they take the place of boby pins and keep the bun up?

Yeah I know, I am in my 30's and don't know this stuff, but it is never to late.

MurphyBird - it's never too late. I didn't learn about french twists 'til I had to go back to work after divorce #2 (I was 40).

I don't know if this will help w/out a diagram, but here goes (this is kind of a cheat for long hair because the instructions you may find consider anything below earlobe length to be long and won't work).

Comb all your hair over to one side. A little to the right or left of center, secure the hair w/combs if your hair is coarse enough to hold them, or bobby pins if not. Take the hair that's free and sort of all to one side now, and "fold" it in half so that you have kind of a giant flat loop of hair w/the ends now touching your head. From the end of the hair that's farthest from your head, start twisting toward your head so you're forming a tube-like structure. When all the hair is twisted, secure w/pins, combs, pharmacy doodads.

You don't have to be a contortionist, but it may take a few tries to get it, so don't try this the first time when you have a job interview.

For that "Hire Me" look, wind it tight and high and spray it. For that "Wouldn't you like to see this down?" look, don't spray too much or at all, pull a few strands out and just let going about your day give you kind of a rumpled look.

wow sadie.........!

One of my fav ways to wear mine is to bend way over, brush all hair toward the floor, with both hands start twisting hair at center front TOWARD the crown. Try to keep it tight as it will loosen plenty when you stand up. When you reach ends of hair keep a good grip, roll around one hand, mash it against back of head, not too high or too low. (you can stand up now) Secure with a french clip or bobby pins. I loath french clips, they pull and break my hair which is like baby hair. I often use one of those teeth gripper thingys, gotta have one the teeth meet properly or it won't hold, though.

This forms a "Gibson Girl" look, I believe it can flatter most any face.

Did you ever read about whatshisname Gibson, how the model was often his sister? I had the book once...... love the look. (Charles?)
