Does anyone know of a program or a place on line that will count the words in a text? My son is supposed to write a 500 word essay and I don't wanna count these words.
Thanks

Hmm, haven't seen you in a long time.
You can download abiword (a halfway decent and small sized word processing app).

Microsoft WORD has a wordcount feature.
It sure does. My boy didn't want to believe me that a report he wrote wasn't long enough till we ran the word count on it. He was 150 words short on a 500 word report.
But if I had my way, the kids would count the words the old fashion way.

It's pretty sad when it gets to the point where a kid is unable to count to 500...

I wasn't gonna' say that, but it is. Also, MS works has the same word count tool that Word has. It's in........tools.

Oddish, actually in the olden days I used to run a typing service, where we'd count five letters per word, however many words per inch (probably not changed with proportional spacing), so I'd measure the length of each line, and add the inches up. For 500 words I'd need 250 inches in 10 characters per inch, or I'd need 210 inches in 12 characters per inch. Maybe that'd work, it's certainly a reasonable estimate.
