Ye gads fair maiden. I could get into this. There's comely damsels to be rescued, plenty of feasting and wenching and the odd joust to do combat in.

Now do you see what I've been missing out on??? A lot of the male type people (and a few female types) that I know are into the fighting, including my brother. I personally am allergic to bruises, so I prefer to prance around in my long gowns. I may perhaps get into archery someday though. All the strong ones stand before the archers and protect them!

There is much feasting, wenching and waring (sp?) to do at a war, they are most fun. LOL, that brings back some fond memories. At our old war site, the battleground was in the middle and the camps formed a large ring around it. So in the night, it was quite common to take a shortcut through the battlefield to get to a camp on the other side. More than once, I've tripped over a person or a pair of persons in the dark. If it was a pair, I'd mutter an apology and be on my way. If it was a single person, we'd usually try to rouse them and take them back to their camp before they got hypothermia.

Sir Mylanta of the burning bowel: Thank you so much for the site...I have saved it so that I can enjoy it and research where my father was a memeber. He had many interests and was an ardent reader of fictional history and medeival times were his favorite. Might have had something to do with the jousting, encampments and mayhap a little wenching! [Oddbodkins and forsooth, not my father!

He was never happier than when he was dealing in Arms & Armor (after he retired) and this led to his membership in the SCA.

edited to replace egad w/oddbodkins!

Alas, I couldnt find an area in my neck of the woods. I live on the boarder of Caid and Mysts, and not quite Western Kingdom. I know we have the renaissence (sp?) fair here every year and its interesting to see, but I dont know if they are part of the SCA or if they are just a group that travel all over. As you can see, I dont know much about this stuff, but it damn sure is interesting!

One quickie post to this thread and then I must go to bed, as it's wayyyyyy past my bedtime! (But I will try to catch up on the others this evening.)

Hepburn, too bad there's not one close by. The weekly fighter practices are rather informal (except for court nights) and a great place to start. There is a major difference between the SCA and Ren Faires. The Ren Faires are for profit and usually the players travel around from faire to faire. SCAers are in it for the history, learning and friendships, not money. We travel too, but not on a long term basis. Meaning we go to a weekend event somewhere, then go home. Not on to the next stop. Ren Faire people are kind of like carnies if that helps. Oh, and Caid is one of our biggest rivals.

Zilvy, your father passed away a year before I found the SCA, when I was 18. I may stray away from it here & there, but I always find myself drawn back into the fold. Most of the people I know are the ones who never quite fit in anywhere else. But in the SCA it works, it's a very welcoming group (at least in my neck of the woods ). Plus there are so many ways you can get involved, so there's a little something for everyone. I may not be a fighter, but I do like embroider & cook, and hope to learn to make cordials soon. (Of course I've been saying that about the cordials for years, been too bust sampling them! ) LOL, I was just remembering my brother's first set of armor: it was made of a plastic 55 gallon drum. I bet that would have made you dad groan!

My husband and I were really active in the SCA for a while.
He was into both forms of fighting and did quite well. I was into the arts and also did a lot of feast cooking in this area.
It really is fun but some of the people are a little too "into" it for my taste.
If you are really into history or just like to hang out with quirky people who are it is great.
Hepburn, did you contact the groups? They will tell you what group is in your area.
I haven't visited a place yet in the US that wasn't claimed by soem barony or shire.

Tegan, way cool, I knew there had to be some other players floating around here somewhere! You'll have to tell me about feast cooking someday. I haven't ever owned a kitchen, so I don't even know how to really camp cook mundane style!
